13 May 2010 @ 15:23

Spain is getting rid of the €2,500 "baby cheque" given to all new mothers.  It will be abolished in January 2011.

This is forecast to affect 400,000 families who will lose the 2,500 euro payment given to new mothers. Also know as the "baby cheque", it was introduced three years ago in Spain to raise the country's birth rate.  This is forecast to affect 400,000 families who will lose the 2,500 euro payment given to new mothers. This cut was amongst a range of other measures introduced by the Spanish Government.  Other measures introduced include:

  • Civil service jobs to be slashed by 13,000 in 2010.
  • Civil service pay cut -- by 5 per cent in 2010 and frozen next year.
  • Public investment reduced by €6.045 billion in 2010 and 2011.
  • Index-linking of pensions -- excluding minimum pensions -- suspended from 2011.
  • Additional spending cuts to save an additional €15 billion this year and the next.
