The end of cheap petrol and diesel in Gibraltar?
12 May 2010 @ 15:31

With the recent tax rises, are we seeing the end of cheap petrol and diesel in Gibraltar?

The Gibraltar authorities recently increased taxes on both petrol and diesel:
•Petrol UP by 4p per litre.
•Diesel UP by 8p per litre.

A couple of months ago, I was paying 67.5 p per litre for Diesel at Shell in Gibraltar.  Last week when I filled up,  it cost me 83.5p per litre for Diesel. This means it is not much cheaper than Spain now.  At the current exchange rate of 1.17 £/€, 83.5p per litre equates to 97.7 cents.  In Spain, the cheapest Diesel I have found is also with Shell and is currently priced at €1.08 per litre.

Unleaded Petrol at Shell in Gibraltar is currently 89.5p per litre, equating to €1.07 per litre. Petrol in Spain is currently €1.17, so not much difference at all.

With the way the euro is falling against the pound, it may soon reach the point where it is cheaper to fill up in Spain.  I certainly won't be making any special trips to Gibraltar just to fill up now.  It's just not worth it.
