Is there anybody there?

It seems that this site is all but abandoned, what a shame. Or maybe everything is going fine at Don Juan!

Does anyone know what is the latest on the proposed golf course that was rubber stamped last year?

Cheers

Hi srs  i think because the tourists numbers are down  in  Spain things are  on hold and no one is spending money, restaurants are  shut and even don Juan is very quiet Irene

Hello Irene. I should have explained better, by "site" I meant this website.

It is interesting that things are quiet over there but maybe it will pick up as from the start of July.

Hopefully restaurant prices etc have come down a bit due to increased competition as we are over in July for a few weeks and cooking is not an option!

Regards

SRS

I have just got home after a great week, Rossinis is new improved a very cheap. Los boliches and Fuengirola very lively and loads of good deals everywhere. Don juan is getting busy especially now the Spanish schools have broken up for the summer and the dogs don't seem as noisy now. My only complaint was having to leave.

Jo.

Hi Jo

I will be in Spain week after next and am looking forward to trying the beer at Rossinis.

Anyone know Which Chiringuito is best at the moment? I generally use the one directly opposite the "ladies" clothes shop. If there is a better one I'd like to hear about it.

Regards

Andy

We tend to eat mainly from Torreblanca to Los Boliches along the front and we noticed at Easter that prices were a little better than last Summer/Christmas.

I feel sorry for the restaurants having to cut their margins but times are tough for all of us so as long as they can survive long may it continue.

Does anyone know of any good eating places not on the front but within say 10 minutes walking distance from the front that can be recommended?

Thanks

SRS

Andy,

If you walk towards Fuengirola the 2nd Chiringuito (just past Rosinni's) is popular with locals. We also like Los Marinos Paco's at the very end as you walk away from Fuerngirola. It is slightly classier without being as expensive as Los Marinos José's on the other side of the road.

SRS - There is a good choice of restaurants on the street parallel with the Paseo 2 streets back behind the Yaramar in Los Boliches.

We also like La Trinacria in Carvajal. Service is slow when they are busy and Millie (the waitress) doesn't speak English but the salads are to die for as are the sardines - which are neatly filleted so no messing around with bones \ heads etc.

they have finally started to tarmac the road from starks to the railway bridge. I don't know if they will carry on along the dirt track to Don Juan, but at least it's a start!

Can anyone add a few photos of the new road. I won't believe it until I see it with my own eyes. Maybe someone who speaks a bit of Spanish couls ask how far they are going with it, and what the plans are for the rest of it and when they expect to complete it.

Regarding restaurants, I agree with David on La Trinacria, the Italian. They even deliver to Don Juan up to about 11.30pm, so great if you fly in late. They even throw in a few beers or soft drinks if you spend a certain amount.. They know all of the blocks as long as you tell them which phase, block, floor and apartment number. Really nice people. Pick up their takeaway menu. I think they are closed Wednesdays.

Another good Chiringuito is just past the Comfortel hotel going in the direction of Fuengirola. Kon Tiki is good for fish and chips. Its 2 streets back from Comfortel Hotel walking in direction of Fuengirola.

Keep us updated on the road.

I agree that 'Casa Kon Tiki' probably has the best fish and chips on the entire coast! (a bold claim i admit, but I didn't get this big on salads!)  but they also have an amazing range of steaks and full menu from liver and bacon to lamb shanks.

I also couldn't believe the road being done with tarmac but I saw it with my own eyes!!!!!!

It is a good sign that the road between the brothel and the railway bridge is being remade. It has been in need of this for years. However it always was within the control of the Town Hall and as such could have been fixed at any time. The so called road beside the railway is in a bad way. As they hope to resolve the problems and finish the road soon they have not even done a temporary job this year but the latest e-mail from the Town Hall suggests that the legal issues with the railway company have not yet been resolved so I don't ecpect them to carry on beyond the railway bridge for the moment.

I have just driven up the ropad from 'Estark' and they haven't done any work on this road at all.   However they have tarmacked directly under the bridge connecting with the road leading up the long steep hill to  'El Higueron'.   Thats it at the moment.

they have done a 25 metre stretch from just below the bridge to the end of the higueron road. I don't think any more will be done as all the equiptment has been taken away again. i dare say that will be all the tarmac we see for a few years now!

It has greatly improved the drive down the road of doom admittedly as the bit under the brige was one of the worst bts, second only to the section directly outside the station.

Thanks Ryan - that looks like the work of El Higueron then. The community has previously made a formal compaint about the state of the road between Estark and the bridge - and will continue to press for this to be fixed.

I hope we don't have to wait for any more years for the main "boulevard" between the bridge and Don Juan to be finished but in view of the inability of the town hall to give us any kind of commitment we will have to wait and see - perhaps we can have a party when it happens?

They will have probably invented something to replace the balloon by the time it gets done.

I know many of you have visited and enjoyed the "new" Rossinis on the front. Sadly, tonight is the last night for the present incumbents. Circumstances which it would be unwise to disclose on an open forum have lead to their decision to quit.

I don't know what the future holds for the bar but the recommendation I made 2 months ago is no longer valid

Luckily their neighbours are an excellent spot for tapas and drinks in a perfect setting with a great terrace. It´s that large corner cafe even closer to us. It´s run by extremely friendly and service minded people who do an excellent job. A very pleasant atmosphere and people who deserve our support as they worked very hard to get where they are now.

Rossini will no doubt find a new owner, but luckily there are ample bars if you walk a bit further down. Personally we rarely visit this small strip of worn down bars and restaurants at the street side. Most of them are a bit depressing and they rarely stick.

Except for the excellent fish restaurant at the left (not the one at the beach but at the opposite of the street) we don´t have many great spots. This one is an exception: it´s usually fully booked for the evening and people visit this from very far due to their well known quality. Top notch. Not as good as El Higueron, but close.

Good restaurants are usually the Spanish ones. We had a funny experience with the Casa Con Tiki restaurant as we used to visit that in the past when it was Spanish owned and one of the better ones in that tourist street. So we settled down with friends to show off and were met with a blank glaze when we tried to order something. It took quite a while before we understood they no longer were owned by the Spanish owners but were taken over by an English one. He had hired staff who didn´t speak a word of Spanish!

The food we got was horrendous: clearly made by people who had never cooked before, but hopefully they now have some experience. As we don´t fancy fish and chips, nor steaks with free bottles of wine which are usually a tell tale sign of bad meat, we haven´t been back. In that same street though, at the far end, at the T-crossing is a new restaurant with a Hungarian owner. They serve traditional spanish food, but also a very good goulash soup, some specialties from Hungary and an excellent mixed grill. Prices are extremely low and the service is far above the average in that tourist trap. Recommended.

Another excellent addition is Malahambra (pretty sure I write it wrong), which is on the square next to the comfortel. People are queing there to eat. It´s so wildly popular that you get a number and they work shifts the whole evening. Prices are low in the view of the excellent food. The kitchen is difficult to describe as it´s a mix of tapas, smalll plates etc all originally made for this restaurant chain. Don´t try to eat there on a Frday evening unless you have all the time in the world OR eat very early and beat the Spanish visitors.

After six years in Spain we know a lot of great little restaurants but usually they are not on the sea side, have spanish food in which they excel and from what we understood is this not always to the liking of the typical forum visitor. Prices are fine though and we see more foreigners who know Fuengirola well there so we are definitely not the only one.

Maybe we should put a thread for good Spanish food as we know lots of clients ask for these places. On average though there is only a very small set of people reading here. We have tried to stimulate them to visit but they don´t find the kind of information they are looking for and don´t feel at home in these settings.

Max.
