The forecasts are not to reliable. It was forecast to rain on Monday - which it did. It was forecast to rain Tuesday but it was a nice sunny day. Showers were forecast for today - it rained pretty well all afternoon and into the evening. So be prepared for mixed weather!

Anyone arriving in Don Juan after it has rained should be aware the "road" by the station becomes extremely muddy after heavy rain. Also due to work on the track trains will be running every 45 minutes on Saturday and Sunday.

Re Spanish TV

I like to look at the news on Spanish TV from time to time and I see that Analog TV transmissions in Spain are going to cease in March 2010.  This means we will have to purchase a Digital Terrestrial tuner if we wish to continue viewing Spanish TV, however I wonder if the current TV antennas in Don Juan will be able to receive the digital signals in a satisfactory manner or will some alterations to the system need to be made?

Hi Gericom

We bought a tv with a digital tuner built in and it works perfectly so I expect, if you connect your aerial input to a Spanish digital tuner and the feed from your digital tuner to your tv you will be able to enjoy the wide choice of channels available on Spanish Digital Terrestrial TV without any adjustment to the aerial

I can confirm this. I bought a separate digital tuner (around 40E) for my very old fashioned television and it works fine. The only problem that you lose the local Fuengirola stations which were fun to follow, but are apparently not in the digital package.

The new train station at the airport to Fuengirola, will not be ready until the end of the year. Some good news though, once it is open trains will run every 20 minutes instead of every 30 minutes.

Hi Andy

I read it in an article that I found on the net. I think it was one of those expat sites. The new station will be under the terminal. Apparently it will also have the new high speed trains coming into there, for the new high speed link from Malaga going past Marbella etc. A new line will be built for this. Hopefully not too close to Don Juan. From what I have heard from Malaga it will go in land  and then come out to coastal stops in the direction of Algerciras but not as far as that in the first phase. This will take years to build ( probably decades ) from past experiences. New motorway roads will be built to access the airport. I think the Western link of the ring road around Malaga is due to open which should ease traffic. The new station and new runway are due to open towards the end of the year. I think current passenger numbers are about 12 million a year passing through the airport. With the new runway, it is expected they will be able to handle up to 30 million passengers a year. I know Ryanair recently made Malaga one of their hubs, though none of their new flights went into the UK. They still only have one route from London.  It would not surprise me if they expand further with more UK routes once the new runway opens. Malaga Airport will be desperate to fill all of these extra flight slots, and to claw back some much needed revenue. So all in all, it should be good news for us all. More flights, better roads and more trains. All we need now is the road at the bottom of the hill to be finished :-)

Another bit of news I read somewhere. The Mijas horseracing venue is to be turned into a dinosaur adventure park.

Below is a report from Gordon regarding the proposed Golf Facilites which he has asked me to share

Report on Meeting with Architect Fransisco Arvilla at the Fuengirola Town Hall on March 8, 2010.

The meeting was arranged by Ken333 but due to a misunderstanding regarding the date he was unable to attend and Gordon went in his place.

The architect described what was agreed on, for development and the actual construction of the golf course.

The area designated is located right on the border between Fuengirola and Benalmadena with approximately 50% on each side.

The center of the location is about 500 meters to the right of the road going up from the railway bridge where Calle Ladera is to the left. It is marked on the map uploaded to community documents and there is also a copy under photos.

To put together enough land for the course the developer, Reserve de Huerigeon needed to trade land which is not allowed for building on. In doing this Fuengirola community offered to replace this land with land designated for construction and as compensation, Reserva de Higueron had to pay for the difference in the value of the land.

According to the architect the available land is big enough to hold a 9-hole golf course, a club house, a driving range and parking.

The following is the process and approximate time table according to the architect:

1.      Letter of intention between Fuengirola and Reserva de Huerigeon signed. Completed

2.      RPGOU (Revisión del Plan General de Ordenación Urbana) May, 2010

3.      Project to be designed by Reserve de Huerigeon and agreed upon between Fuengirola and Benalmadena completion possibly 2012. During this time Reserva de Huerigeon also need to solve finance issues.

4.      Fuengirola and Benalmadena issuing license for the building process.

The golf course is not going to be communal but privately owned by Reserva de Huerigeon. The plan is that both Fuengirola and Benalmadena will be able to use it for golf classes based on a separate agreement.

In conclusion, based on the information the architect was able to release, unfortunately the golf course will not be built at the speed the information we got through the press indicates. It will not be community owned and it will be a 9-hole golf course.

Hi Calv

Thanks for that. For those that don't have the train website, it is    http://www.renfe.es/cercanias/malaga/index.html

Click on Horarios lower down the screen, open the 3 boxes along the top line to pick your departure station from the first box, your arrival station from the second box, and date of travel from the third box, the click on Horarios on the second line to bring up the full timetable. For those travelling in over the Easter 28 / 29/ 30 / 31 March & 1 / 2 April they are running late trains from Malaga Airport. The last 2 trains are 23.17 and 23.47.

Hi Gericomm

It is a new group set up with a number of other groups / communities in the Carvajal area, to try and put pressure on the authorities to fix the problems we have in the Carvajal area, for eg; the road by the railway.

Other news;

The local train line which links Fuengirola and Málaga once again started to run into the centre of Málaga yesterday with the opening of the new ‘Centro-Alameda’ station. A second access to the new station, from behind the Correos building, will open next week. Trains now leave from both the Centro station in Malaga and from Fuengirola on the hour and half hour with a total journey time of 50 minutes. New Civia trains will be used on the line from April 5, which are already in use on the other local line to Alora.

Meanwhile work continues on the Málaga metro construction with 2.5 kms of tunnel now excavated in Velázquez under the Carretera de Cádiz. It means the link between the Martín Carpena sports stadium to the Avenida de la Paloma is completed.
