Well it looks like my cows haven't come yet. and I was sure at the beginning of the week that we would have them milked by now!  Obviously we have to wait a little longer for the cream...
As Davmunster said I suppose no news is good news but it's getting suspiciously near the end of August and the holiday period so am I foolish in hoping that unprecedented levels of activity will commence on the first full working day in September, Monday 2nd ?   I can just picture emails & calls flying out from solicitors looking for money & bookings with notaries at a rate of knots or could some other little "arrangement" be waiting in the long grass to trip us up with a further delay leaving us with no option but to go for the Valium again?   As Confucius or was it Cheney once said (I think) "We have nothing to fear from the known unknowns - it's the unknown unknowns that might catch us out".  Does that make any sense......?

Thank you Aengus1, I knew someone would help me out....

To disrupt the Irish monopoly I thought I'd better post something! (Welsh ancestry but living in England so still Celtic)

I think we all dived into the unknown with this development thinking that it was a known quantity - reputable estate agents etc.  How naive were we?  I'm beginning to be grateful that the apartments have been built and the developer not gone bust with our money.

On a more mundane level. Can anyone recommend a good (nice but reasonable priced) furniture store?  Lorraine & Eoin you said you've bought all yours.  I personally hate the dark Spanish style of furniture and like modern.  I love Ikea but needless to say like most men Bachir (my other half) hates it so I think a trip to Seville is out of the question - unless the Fuengirola one is due to open soon. Incidently were is it?  We don't actually know the area very well only the main town and the new shopping plaza (can't remember it's name).

Hi Sonia,

We bought some furniture from A Benitez (Spanish owned and Spanish style but a big store with a good range). We also bought from Imperial which is British owned on the old Coin road. There are a lot of retail warehouse units on the old Coin road specialising in various things.

The only thing you need to be aware of is that a lot of stuff is not in stock and takes about 6 weeks to come in.

Ikea are opening near Malaga airport. It was due "at the end of the year" - although if our experience is anything to go by that could be any year. We will be going to Ikea in Seville. There is some stuff they do we want and they are also great for small stuff - crockery, cutlery glasses and all the bits and peices we'll need. There are "men with Van for hire" who can go and collect big stuff for you if required.

Hi all

Sonia El, there are some furniture stores up in Mijas on a stretch of road, unfortunately I dont know the name of the road, but if you take a trip up there, I am sure you will come across it.  Also there is a very good shopping complex just off the N340 past the airport, and past Makro on the way to Malaga. There are lots of large stores there. We bought our sofa and beds there at a store called Merka Confort, got a very good deal. They always seem to have a 30% off sale. Very good quality. They have had our stuff in storage for nearly a year, at no charge. Ask for Jose Marcos Perez.,  he is a really helpful guy. The address of the complex is Parque Comercial Malaga Nostrum, 29004, Malaga. Phone 952 17 64 38. There is a Bauhaus store on the complex as well, which is llike our version of B&Q, plus lots of others. If you have a friend with a Makro card in the UK, bring it with you, and go there first. They dont check for ID, and there is no problem using the card in Spain. Lots of stuff there for the apartment very very cheap at trade price + vat.  I am flying over tomorrow (Saturday 25th Aug) and will be stocking up on an industrial scale on beer & wine, just to numb the agony of having to cough up another €1000 just to stay in someone elses apartment when I should be staying in my own. The makro address is Avd. Velázquez, 290Ctra. Nal. 340. Málaga - Cádiz, Km. 238,40029004 Málaga Tel.: 952 17 70 70 . From Don Juan follow airport signs, but once on the N340 go past the San Miguel factory on the other side, dont take the sign for the airport, as you drive along you will see Makro on the other side. Take the next slip road, I think it says something?? industrials. Go up over flyover, this brings you to the shopping complex I was previously talking about. Carry on past the complex to the small roundabout, and go back on yourself at this roundabout, then keep right to rejoin the N340 on the side where Makro and the San Miguel factory is. When you rejoin the N340, keep in the right hand llane and drive slowly, as Makro is only a few hundred yards along, and its easy to miss the little slip road. I hope this makes sense to you all. As for Ikea its on the way to Malaga near the ???Plaza shopping area. If you look at the train stations at Carvajal Station, the Plaza is one of the stops. They are recruiting at the moment. A friend of mine who lives locally says he heard it was to open in late October. Now that could mean late October 2050 now that we know how things work in Spain. If you cannot wait that long, you can order stuff from the Seville one, and they will deliver to the Malaga area. Hopefully i will bring some good news to you all when I am over. Looking forward to meeting Max, Saskia, Maureen & Chris(mozza), Gande and any others that can make it to the Calypso bar in Los Boliches seafront on Mondayy at 8.30pm.

Good luck

Westport

This may be of some benefit to some of you. New tax rules coming in.

Exemption from benefit-in-kind charge for directors of companies owning

overseas homes

Where a UK resident individual is a director of a company which owns a property

abroad available for their use, then they are potentially liable to income tax and NIC

on the benefit they derive from using the property.

The Chancellor has announced he is to introduce a measure which will remove

that tax charge and that it will have a retrospective effect. There are conditions to be

met, namely that the property is the company's only or main asset and that its only

activities relate to the ownership of that property. The company must also be owned

by individuals and must not be funded by a connected company. This will be of

assistance to many who have purchased holiday homes in European countries which

favour ownership via corporate structures.

Hi Everyone

Thank you for all the information regarding furniture.  We've driven past the Imperial shop and I've seen their ads. We've been to that Plaza ? shopping-eating complex one day when killing time waiting for a plane.  We are going (coming??) over on September 16th for one week and planning to spend some time looking around. Like you Westport not very pleased at paying out for accomodation.  We laughingly thought that end of September would be a fairly safe bet when we booked the flights in February.

The site is beginning to look better. At one time I really hated those huge stone embankments, would still look better with a few nice Mediterranean palms but if necessary I'm sure we, as the community, could organise that.

Hope the get together went well this weekend. If anyone is around week of Sept 16th let us know and we'll try and meet up too!

Sonia

Hi Brenna, IreneMontague, Sonia El and everyone

We are also in Benalmadena 11 to 18 September and we are in Block 8, (semisentano C).  It would be great to all meet up and actually put faces to names and to meet out new neighbours.   It would be good if Max and Saskia were free if they too could meet up as well and anyone else who can make it.  Hope you all had a good time on 27 August.

Just a suggestion but how about 17 Sept at Max's favourite place (The Calypso Bar) at 8.30pm, unless anyone has any other ideas, we are willing to try any other restaurants or bars.

Regards

Jim and Joan

Hi Irene,
Maybe your son confuses the Calypso bar with the Caribean bar? The Calypso is on a corner at the beach front in the Torreblanca area. It's opposite the large white beach restaurant El Bote. It'a ten to fifteen minutes walk along the beach from Don Juan in the direction of the center.
If we can make it we will certainly attend.
