Software cheat lets people watch BBC iPlayer abroad
07 November 2010 @ 14:55

British expats can now watch BBC TV abroad for free, via the Corporation’s online iPlayer, after the release of a computer program which tricks the system into thinking it is in Britain.

The iPlayer’s catch-up service is only available in the UK, a common source of annoyance for British expats. But Expat Shield – designed by software company AnchorFree – assigns a UK IP address to connections made abroad, making it appear domestic.

It has been technically possible for people outside the UK to access the iPlayer for some time via Virtual Private Networks – similar to those used by companies to provide staff with remote access to their work IT facilities – but, as technology blog The Next Web reports, the VPNs required to secure it are complicated and usually cost money to set up. Expat Shield, however, is free to download. Both companies were unavailable to comment.

We use a VPN, which costs us just over 6 pounds a month, but is cheaper than paying for satellite TV! We have had no problems with it to date.

I downloaded and had a play about with it and got iPlayer to work no problem. However, I started to get suspcicious when my firewall kept prompting to allow some odd looking connections. So I have removed it.
I'll stick to my £6 per month VPN as well.

I notice that this is available on CNET for download, and I doubt they would allow anything dodgy to be downloaded. I think the software is annoying rather than dangerous.

Loads of CNET reviewers found problems with it though, think I'll stick with cheap proxy!

Downloading software onto your computer that allows you access to UK TV and web content (VPN or Virtual Private Networks) from abroad can be tricky. There is a new solution that involves no software installation at all, simply order the Virtual Global Router Box. This box offers the full VPN service but in addition you can watch several devices at the same time. For example, the children could be watching UK programmes such as 'Hannah Montana' or 'Dora the Explorer' on the Playstation whilst Mum catches up with Eastenders on the TV/PC and Dad plays a game of online poker on the laptop. The one box allows you to connect multiple devices at the same time and is so easy to set up, you simply plug in and play. NO software downloads, NO computer configurations - full access to the whole UK online TV experience both live and catch up.

We have recently bought this router box, set it up in 10 minutes and it works perfectly.

I have bought the above box from globaluktv and use it in Malaga, as my flat has not satellite connection! It is connect to my PS3 so I can view TV on my 43" plasma and I get BBC Iplayer, ITV player and 4OD. It also gives me some live BBC TV. I have tried other providers, but have found that reliability and speed has been an issue. - Great bit of kit, I can highly recommend.

expat shield from cnet site works fine.
NO BUGS/VIRUSES. YOU NEED only use it when you are watching tv channels then switch back to your other internet connection.
if slow on some channels you can elect to download and watch later. excellent.
