Updated Monday morning, statement from Spectrum

"Spectrum FM Costa Almeria would like to unreservedly apologise for the promotion of bullfighting that appeared on this page yesterday. Spectrum FM do not condone bullfighting in any way, shape or form but we do live in a country where bullfighting is legal. We were approached by a company wishing to promote xxxxxxxx's annual fiesta and the bullfighting in particular and we took the decision to promote the event. Due to the response from our listeners and readers we have decided to remove all publicity regarding this event and I apologise once again if any offence was caused."

Personally, I think they should NEVER have put themselves in that position, they will NOT regain their credibility by THIS statement!

Rent to buy’s ugly side. Quesada agent is accused of pocketing rent
Wednesday, September 11, 2013

RENT TO buy has been a popular option put forward by real estate agents throughout the world, to help prospective buyers who in this time of financial crisis have difficulty finding a mortgage lender. Likewise sellers would rather have their mortgage payments covered by rent on a property that they no longer wish to own.

It’s not a perfect situation but it offers a semi-satisfaction level for all three parties involved: the seller who does not default on bank payment; the renter who has a property to live in; the real estate agent who is making a commission on the rental deal. However, allegations have been made that in at least one instance, the rent is gong directly to the agent and not to the seller, as the seller is oblivious to the fact that their property is being lived in.

In the majority of cases the seller has sold up and left Spain, leaving power of attorney for any possible sale in the hands of their Real Estate agent. However, an uglier side to this practice has now reared its head and one Quesada based agency in particular is being accused of renting out houses on their books without the knowledge of the sellers and pocketing the entire rental income.

This scam has been performed before along the coast, but usually the agency has shut shop overnight and disappeared. In this case, the agency in question, who cannot be named at this time, has a high profile and advertises both locally on the Costa Blanca and in magazines further south.

Thus, while investigations continue, if you have placed your property in the hands of an agency operating out of Quesada, have proof or evidence that they have rented your property without your express knowledge and you have a contract allowing them to do so, or you are renting a property that is for sale and are subjected to allowing prospective clients to view, please let RTN`s Keith Nicol know by emailing: keith@roundtownnews.com

British Embassy in Madrid urges expats to take last chance to find out about correct use of the European Health Insurance Card
Friday, September 6, 2013

News article
British Embassy in Madrid urges expats to take last chance to find out about correct use of the European Health Insurance Card.

A campaign to explain how British citizens should use their European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) continues throughout the autumn with talks across the Valencia Autonomous Community.

These talks will complete a campaign that has successfully raised awareness of EHICs and how to use them among British citizens and Spanish healthcare staff in the Valencia region since last September.

Martyn Standing, who leads the campaign on behalf of the UK Department of Health, said,

After a lot of stories in the media about EHICs over the last few months, this is a great opportunity for expats to come and get the facts straight from the horse’s mouth.

Given the recent changes to the state healthcare system and the latest news regarding the Spanish Government Insurance Scheme, which will provide state healthcare for people who aren’t currently covered, Britons living in Spain really shouldn’t miss the chance to get to one of the final talks on EHICs.

The campaign has also targeted the administrative staff of the Valencia Health Authority to explain how the UK government covers its citizens in Spain and how their medical care is funded. The campaign has involved an innovative partnership between the Department of Health and Valencia Health Authority, with European Union funding.

Comprehensive information on the use of EHICs can be found at EHIC website.

Talks will be held at the following venues:

10th Sept – Guardamar del Segura – Casa de Cultura, Calle Colón, 60
24th Sept – La Nucia – Centro Cultural Auditori de la Mediterránia, Plaza de l’Almassera, 1
2nd Oct – San Fulgencia – Ayuntamiento de San Fulgencio, Centro Social, Calle San Fransisco de Asís, Urb La Marina
3rd Oct – Orihuela Costa – Ayuntamiento de Orihuela Costa, Salon de Actos, Playa Flamenca N332
22nd Oct – Santa Pola – Casa de la Cultura, Calle Elche 24
5th Nov – San Miguel de Salinas – Casa de Cultura de San Miguel de Salinas, Plaza Jaime I
19th Nov – Teulada-Moraira – To be confirmed
11th Dec – Pilar de la Horadada - Casa de Cultura, Salón de Actos, Calle Carretillas, 19
12th Dec – Algorfa - Centro Cultural San Vicente Ferrer, Calle Mayor, 33

These talks begin at noon.

Torrevieja will have a home tele-care service for the elderly
Tuesday, September 3, 2013

Torrevieja will have a home tele-care service for the elderly. The council has approved a budget of 100,000 euros for this and meals on wheels programme.

Torrevieja council spokesman Joaquín Albaladejo has announced new policies of the Social Welfare Department aimed at elderly people.

The first of these is a commitment to allocate 100,000 euros of the 2014 municipal budget to the home 'tele-care' service, from which about 500 elderly or disabled people will benefit. They will have a communication kit with which by using a button they can keep in contact with a specialised centre over the telephone 24 hours a day.

This service permits users, who do not need permanent attention in person, to have the peace of mind that if they do have an attack of anxiety or loneliness, have a health problem, a fall or other accident, they can immediately contact an Attention Centre for assistance.

Albaladejo indicated that currently, according to information from the Alicante Provincial Council, more than 500 residents could benefit form the service.
