I think you have misunderstood my post. I said, or meant to say, that from CORVERA it is about 35 mins to Alicante airport. It is also 25 mins from Corvera to MJV.
johnmcmahon
I frequently travel between MJV and Alicante. At different times of the day and also different times of the year. Of the two routes you suggested it takes about the same time. The costs are about the same taking into account the tolls the mpg and the mileage. Its 6 of one and half a dozen the other. Another alternative is to go via Murcia and then the motorway to Alicante. This route takes about 10 minutes longer but there are no tolls! So once again you pays your money and takes your chances.

There are many investigation into state aid for industry by the EU. It's against EU rules. Real Madrid and Barcelona in Spain and Celtic in Scotland are being investigated at the moment. I would have thought one of the objectors might be Alicante rather than Heathrow etc.

The travelling times will vary depending on many factors, but the point is that they are too close in todays environment. Presumably Corvera was conceived at the turn of the century when building and tourism was booming and they anticipated/assumed this would continue.
Yes it was silly, but to some extent this is being wise after the event, but in 10 years time there may be a real need for the two airports, who knows?
To me the EU involvement is farcical. I cannot see how from a national perspective this can considered as being "unfair competition" - which is all the EU remit should be based upon. The viability of Corvera is not relevant. But under the "unfair competition" question why should Gatwick, Heathrow, Orly or Schipol etc be bothered if Corvera was or wasn't subsidised? It's pure bureacracy and no doubt the EU will pontificate ad nauseum to let everyone know how important they are.
But given the fact that Corvera is now built it would be good if they find a way to make it work, perhaps on a smaller scale than envisaged 15 years ago. This avoids the wastage, has a positive effect on tourism, gives us a bit of choice, provides a few more jobs and increases the chance that Paramount might happen sometime in the future.

the N332 is cheaper (no tolls) and shorter, but slower, there are numerous roundabouts,
the AP7 is a motorway, motorways are supposed to be quicker
estates agents will tell you Alicante airport is only 30 min from San Javier, they will also tell you Murcia is 20 minutes from the coast, and Madrid is probably only 1 hour from the Mar Menor, as we all know, reality is slightly different

I've never tried it myself but I've been told that it's much quicker between St. Javier and Alicante airports if you avoid the AP7 and take the N332

If one takes a step back and forgets about ones own personal feelings as to which airport will be better for them and then considers the FACTS:-
In a very short distance there are at the moment 2 airports (MJV and Alicante/Elche) and only one of them is attracting a reasonable number of passengers. Both are State owned and within a 1 hour drive of eachother. Both are 'on the coast' and therefore good for attracting the 'holidaymakers/overseas property owners'. For those that do not know it takes about 35mins to drive to Alicante from Corvera and about 25 mins to MJV.
What Corvera is saying is that they will attract up to 40% of Alicante's passengers so that they can be the airport of choice for all the passengers that want somewhere more than 30mins south of Alicante. My personal thoughts are that the people in that catchment area choose MJV because it is a 'small' airport with much easier and quicker boarding/unloading than a bigger airport like Alicante and if ever opened, Corvera.
At the moment it has now been pointed out to Murcia that they have contraviened EU laws by giving State money to a PRIVATE company. This is serious and is now being adjudged by our Lords and Masters at the EU who can not accept or condone the backhanders that might or might not have happened here. They will judge the loan on its merits and also review ALL the facts. Amongst these facts are that there is a perfectly good and functioning airport about 30 minutes drive away (Alicante). The present loan does not cover the cost of the payment to MJV of about €70 million, so where is this additional money coming from? The passenger footfall at MJV is exceedingly low and IF all theses passengers were to transfer to Corvera it still would not be able to make a profit and therefore will fail and then leave the Region of Murcia with whatever loan is outstanding for the residents of the Region to pay for with extra taxes.
The EU will also judge if it is even necessary to have an airport in Murcia region at all. The figures do not look good that this will be viable. Therefore what might happen is that MJV closes and the ONLY airport for the Costa Blanca/Calida area will be Alicante.
The question that everyone should be asking is why has nothing been done to the individuals who 'granted' the loan as they have contraviened EU law and seem to have got away Scot Free?

Murcia Airport: Corvera or San Javier?
Murcia Today has an interesting article about the latest issues at Corvera Airporrt.
http://murciatoday.com/work-to-open-corvera-airport-continues_23149-a.html#.VELSf410zIV
One assetion that interested me is that 'According to Sr Campos "everyone wants a civil airport in Myrcia, and everyine wants it to be at Corvera".
Personally I'm happy with San Javier - simple and efficient, usually less than 20 mins and we're into the hire car. i can't see Corevera being in any way that efficient.
I also don't see that the issues ever being resolved!
Maybe a petition to keep San Javier open!
Mike.

Can I ask why none of this info is on the Corvera G&CC forum? Ive just looked and there was a direct question asked recently about the Airport (by Simon_golf?)but no-one ever responded. Isn't this of vital importance to everyone who bought on there? Only asking!

I hope they NEVER close Murcia , San Javier its a real jem of an airport and well used by the population of Camposol ( 45 minutes drive all motorway. 66km ).
Last week we miss-timed our return journey and arrived next to SJ Airport Terminal with a car hire to check in. It was 11,20AM . The Gate for our flight was due to close at 11.20AM.... so it was close... after dropping off the hire car at Goldcar, clearing security and joining the Priority Q for Ryanair took just 10 minutes. Incredible... we were sitting on the plane at 11.35.
Dont think another airport would be so easy .. Corvera .... ? if it happens, it happens. but for now San Javier carry on please

Creative ownership???
Sounds as if they need more creative funding as no one has 70 mill to compensate AENA let alone the money to pay for the build.
Private investors in an airport competing with one up the road run by AENA already, where is the sense?
Castellon has been built exactly how long?
As 60% tourists in this region are Spanish, far better to build the AVE to Madrid from Murcia.
Why would the Russians want to fly to Corvera when Alicante has more nearby.
PS Roy yes Murcia Today do take their news from all other news sources but are normally far less sensationalist than printed press and try to see all sides, they have no vested interests.

Brad if you have lived here as long as we both you you will know that nothng is straghtforward and in this case the govenrment will do what they have to not to loose face, Aeromor are going through an appeal process
The facts are that the San Javier airport has another ready made user the airforce who really want it back
There is scope for creative ownership in the new airport, who knows perhaps some form of joint agreement will have different ownership clauses and ways for AENA to recover €70m over an agreed time and we have suddenly seen a dramatic increase in news

Thanks Roy. With regard to your thoughts on the current franchisee - and sorry if l am not understanding this correctly - but isn't it the case that Aeromur are having their management contract withdrawn, and that although it will be put out to tender it will most likely then be awarded to AENA? How does this get them the €70m compensation they are seeking? As l see it the problem will surely still be unresolved. Again sorry if l haven't fully grasped the facts.

It is often difficult for me to comment as Bradders quite rightly points out I do let to airport staff and have been accused in the past of having some bias because it would undoubtably benefit my sales and rental businesses
I seem to have spent years working in the background with this project, meetings with the airlines and operational staff for accomodation and I am not sure what happened but at one point last year I had accomodation allocated for senior operational people that ended up being cancelled, believe me thos is very frustrating
Visits by the way from not just Eurpoean airlines, the clue is in the airport name and mission, an INTERNATIONAL airport for the region
My business luckily does not rely on the airport openning, we had a strong Summer rental period with people enjoying the resort
My own view remains that they will open the airport ready for the main season next year and that it will be based on some from of joint agreement between the current franchisee and AENA, which then allow them to close San Javier and not have to worry about the €70m compensation
The T&C's allow the airlines to transfer flights because it is on the basis that commercially were outside of their control and of course they can offer a refund but as already said the discount airlines base their flight schedules on price
If you read about the airport the facts are that the region believes that they need a strategically located internal airport and San Javier just isnt it, yes a great holiday airport destination but not an airport or the future
I believe that you will find that the Murcia Today pieces are based around the main press articles, esppecially of you translate the articlesa and compare them

Yes Chris a balanced report - as far as it goes - but one that leaves many unanswered questions eg where will the €70m come from. Justin posted earlier here that he did not think Corvera would ever open, and l must say that the €numbers are so mind-bogglingly big now that it does make it hard to see how the airport can work economically. In the past Roy from lnspectahome (who acts for clients letting properties to staff working at the airport) has invariably been the source of promising news on what's happening there, and his insight would be welcome.
