Hi all, I am australian and married to a spanish citizen.

I would like to know, when I receive my Spanish Citizenship:

1) Does Spain recognise my Australian citizenship?
2) and if I was to return to Australia, would I still be considered Australian and be able to use my Australian passport?

I've looked around but can't seem to find the answers.

thanks

Spain does not permit dual nationality, except for nationals from its former colonies.

If you take Spanish nationality you must denounce any other nationality.

(Some people lie about it though, just don't get caught with two passports).

There are two issues.

First, it is correct that Spain does not recognise dual nationalities.

Since 2002, however, Australia does.

Just because Spain would not recognise your Australian citizenship, that does not impact on the view Australia takes... it is similar to US/UK dual citizenship. Even if you "renounce" your UK citizenship in another country, the UK takes no notice of that fact (there is a procedure for doing this, but it has to be done via the UK directly). As noted in the advice above, though, it pays to enter Australia on an Australian passport if you have one, as it pays to enter the US on a US passport, and the UK on a UK passport...

Correct, though I assume in this case, that is not so, given Australia was never a Spanish colony.

66  correct that was why I posted

Australia (as Britain) however, does not acknowledge or recognise this and continues to extend citizenship, regardless.

Because some countries do not have a problem with their nationals having dual nationality ( I have British and Irish) that why I said, 'some people lie about denouncing their original nationality’  when they get Spanish nationality.

Sorry I thought I had made that pretty clear.

Both my grandfathers were born in Spain and I have the paperwork for the one on my mothers side. She is alive and we originally come from the Philippines. Could advise me on how to go about getting dual citizenship or point me to the forum that deals with this please? We are going to Spain for a 3 week holiday in Jan 2015 - just wondering what I can do beforehand to perhaps have something to take with us?

Thanks Joe
