Arriving at Barcelona Airport - is it better to pre-book a rental car or rent locally for travel around Spain?
| The Comments |
I’ll be flying into Barcelona Airport and plan to explore the region by car. I’m trying to decide between booking ahead online or renting locally after arrival. Any tips or other things to watch out for when renting at the airport?

@robinchan Pre-booking is usually the safer option at Barcelona Airport, especially if you’re traveling in peak season. Walk-up rentals often cost more and availability can be limited once you land.
I often check aggregator listings eg. Vipcars first, then decide whether to book there or directly with the rental company. It will give you a sense of the price range and car availability before deciding where to book. And driving around Barcelona and the wider region is straightforward, but watch for toll roads and restricted city zones. If you’ve sorted the details in advance, pickup at the airport is generally quick and hassle-free.

I’d agree that pre-booking is usually the smarter move, especially if you want peace of mind after landing. Having things sorted in advance saves time, helps you avoid higher walk-up prices, and lets you compare options properly. I’ve found that this approach works not just for car rentals in Europe, but also for attractions when traveling elsewhere. For example, when I was in Dubai, planning ahead for major sights instead of deciding on the spot made the trip much smoother—using BurjTicket helped me avoid queues and manage my schedule better. In general, whether it’s transport or experiences, a bit of advance planning really reduces stress while traveling.
