Shaving With Broken Glass

When in the UK I restocked Superdrug’s own brand of triple edge razor blades. I could get weeks of comfortable use out of them. I seem to recall the brand was started by an ex-Gillette executive.

 

This insider knew that soft steel is used to prematurely blunt the blade so they are replaced more often. His brand used a much harder steel. Alas! I have used them all up.

 

I took a chance on cheaper brands here in Spain! Ouch! Even the first shave was like using broken glass. Guess it’ll be back to the electric shaver. I think the old-style razor blade were smoother by comparison despite advances in manufacturing.

 I only use Gillette Sensor 3 disposables, slightly more expensive but last for ever. This is a product that clearly displays differences between white brands and established brands, price is relevant with shaving blades, at least from my experience and I always go back to Gillete triple blades. Tried them all.

I never seem to be able to get a decent shave when I'm in Spain. The blades don't seem to last as long and I think this is to do with the Viagra in the water.
Anyway last time I was over I purchased a razor from Lidl that was supplied with a load of blades so that should see me through for a while.
Also Tesco's were selling a razor on special offer from 'King of Shaves' for about £3 also with spare blades.

Viagra in the water? I knew we were in a hard water area but didn't know the reason why.
Gillette blades, proglide, superglide, smoothglide, sensor or whatever sexy marketing name they come up with. Be prepared for a sharp (pun intended) intake of breath when you see the price (both here and in UK), especially since they changed the pack size from 10s and 5s to 8s and 4s without reducing the price. However, get two razors (the actual razors are quite cheap but once you've bought it they have you as other blades don't fit). They do last quite a long time and, once they start getting a bit scratchy, put it away in the cabinet and use the next one. Once that gets scratchy, dig out the old one and use it and you'll find it's back to being sharp again. This can work 2 or sometimes 3 times. Coming up to August and I'm only on my 3rd blade received as a Christmas present (another good way to cut down on price - get someone else to buy them for you).
As you can purchase a non-branded MP3 player for the same cost as one blade, it's always good to save a little. Of course, you could always take up shop lifting or grow a beard (neither recommended in Spain).

A number of my friends seem to be very satisfied with"RazorSharp" which costs about £15 with postage, and cleans and sharpens the old blade.  They've been getting about 100 shaves from a blade.  Google it and have a look.  (I have no connection with the firm and personally use an electric razor.)

Thanks for input. I will try those Gillette Sensors. I once earned a reasonable living importing knives and selling knife-related books so took an interest in them.

 

The Japanese and Americans take great interest in state of the art knives and if I can use the expression, cutting edge technology. I heard of one Japanese knife that was tested in an extraordinary way. Placed in a slow moving river it would neatly slice a floating leaf on impact.

Hallelujah! Picked up a pack of Maquinillas Desechables HOMBRE from Mercadona. Very reasonable price. Shaving? I thought I had left the blade’s plastic protector on it was so smooth and continued to be so for days. Thanks for positive comments and suggestions.

I also have the same problem shaving in Spain. Maybe it is the viagra in the water, maybe it's the high prices of Gillette blades that make me buy cheaper blades that don't last. I read on the internet the other week that if you run your razor along a pair of jeans five times each way, it sharpens up the blades and they last a lot longer. I haven't tried it but maybe it's worth a go.

Good advice. There's nothing worse than accidentally shaving your nut-sack with a blunt razor......or with a razor bought from Mercadona!
