looking for work in architecture/ design

Hi,

Like many of you already did, I would like to take "the plunge". I'm a university graduate in architecture from UQAM in Montreal/ Canada, with 4 years of experience in the commercial field. I have been dreaming of living in Spain for some time now, but I only hope my timing isn't THAT bad due to the instable economic situation. I was aiming for Barcelona or Valencia actually at this point i would take anywhere. 

The job search in Spain is highly tedious, and i have trouble getting an answer from firms. I’ve translated my CV into Spanish as well as my letter of presentation. I’ve read a lot on the hiring process, but still nothing. I am also taking Spanish courses, and now I reached intermediate level. I am conscious that I need further classes, but it will come in time.

I was wondering if ANYONE has any advice or pointers to guide me towards a potential job. I think that if I had one foot over there it will be much easier and less of big financial risk.

For starters the very area you mention has been hit hard by the recession and many firms have already laid off a lot of staff and reduced their office size etc

Secondly the Spanish rarely reply to emails which is really annoying at the best of times. Try phoning?

Thirdly you are going to find it really difficult to get a proper job. Most at best will only offer some type of self-employed role and you will have to register as self employed and pay all your own taxes and social welfare etc.

Finally I also believe the college of architects are less than accommodating when it comes to recognising overseas qualifications and to be honest the Spanish are not too fond of outsiders unless they think you can get them some work or introduce clients then the say they would like to collaborate with you. If there is a job it will go to a family member or son/daughter of someone who might help them etc. Do you have any specialist skills/experience that might help you?

But if you're still interested it may be you have to come and just really try to make good contacts or simply try walking into offices etc. I'm not trying to put you off but just being honest.
