Just seen here...    Definitely a case for a  as far as I, & many others, are concerned!

Reports in La Razón show possible changes in legislation

La Razón reports Monday that the Ministry for Health is considering a year’s grace before applying the new tougher anti-smoking legislation in bars.

The paper makes it clear that the Minister for Health, Trinidad Jiménez, does not want to back pedal on banning smoking in all closed public spaces, but is prepared to give a year’s postponement of the legislation in the case of bars following an avalanche of complaints from the hostelry sector, several regional administration, and even the CEOE Employers’ organisation who are concerned about the effects at a time of recession and following the increase in IVA which comes into effect on July 1.

The tobacco industry has made representations calling for a five year delay.

With or without the amendment it now looks unlikely

Yeah, I read that too.  Seems incredible really although talking to some Spanish bar owners I know they are very worried about what the introduction of the smoking ban will do to their business.

Mind you, it was implemented without many problems in Italy so I can't see why it would be such a problem here.

Let's see what happens.

Justin

"although talking to some Spanish bar owners I know they are very worried about what the introduction of the smoking ban will do to their business."

Exactly.

I think the Government as a whole has more important things to think about right now, in terms of the Spanish economy, than affecting the businesses of those who are still managing to make a living.

What ever happened to this Smoking Ban?

It was due to be introduced in early January, but was then delayed due to further talks.

However, I seem to remember reading somewhere that it was due to come into force today - 1st June 2010.

Any ideas?

The smoking ban has been postponed until next year due to the recession/depression.

Still prefer the freedom of choice where owner can decide whether to allow smoking or not!

And also still allowing the customer the freedom of choice!

Is it not far better for a bar to survive these economic times, then close down and be lost like many bars in the UK.

By the way I had smoked 60 a day for the past 35 years, but recently stopped smoking, 90 days without cigarette to press.

why keep putting off the ban? why put political and financial issues above health? spain is already way behind other countries.  the government should never have allowed owners of premises of less than 100 sq metres to choose whether to allow smoking. have you never been in one of these small cafes where the whole family is smoking over the baby in the pram, and the toddler! so much for the child friendly society. the health minister is showing weakness- be brave snra jiminez, and ban it now-everywhere! do you really think everyone will stay at home and not socialise. they can do what they do now- stand outside and drop their fag ends on the pavement, because, apparently they are not termed as rubbish out here!

wel said, let's get rid of the filthy rubbish once and for all.  Nothing to do with freedom of choice, but everything to do with health and fitness. Those who are pro-smoking are simply in denial, which is another fould side of the addiction.

Just love reading these "smoking" threads where all the righteous non smokers come out to bash the evil smokers.  I agree there are health issues and  I am also right behind the ban in pubs.

What I find ironic and slightly hypocritical is people harping on about the health issues of passive smoking that might affect bar patrons as they knock back 10 pints of lager, while not having any issues with the level of drinking going on.

As long as its legal it is a freedom of choice...unlike being drunk and disorderly or serving drunk patrons which I believe is illegal in a lot of countries.

Again I'm all for the ban as I only have the odd smoke so it won't affect me and I much prefer a bar without all the smoke.

We all know that alchohol in moderation is harmless, and even benificial in the case of  small quantities of wine and beer.  The opposite is true of fags. They are proven to be very harmful even in the passive sense. Of course booze is bad in large quantities, but most of us probably drink/smoke in moderation most of the same, so probably makes sense to judge damage on that basis?

Dear All,

our off-plan community president/chairman here now wears a huge scar on his neck after a life-time of smoking.

they found a "harmless" tumour surrounding a cancerous one which gave sufficient protection to stop the spread.

he is "demob happy" and taking a different view of life despite losing his job in the process.

"things" are not worrying him so much now.

however he cannot live without it, but is proud of only three a day.

the pure drinking pubs here may be closing but the eating pubs are thriving.

it used to make me angry to be sitting near eaters who smoked between courses.

things are much better with them all hanging about outside under make-shift shelters from the wind and rain.

don't delay

Regards

Norman

There would be a very small minority who make the trip to the pub for only a small glass of beer for health reasons.  Even what an average person would see as drinking in moderation would be regarded as excessive and unhealthy by the health experts.  But we all make our own choices.

Anyway I'm not defending smoking, as far as I'm concerned they should ban it if the health reports support this.

It just seems to be a favourite pasttime of many to bash the smokers...

glad to hear you are for a ban as well. I guess the point i'm trying to make is that there will always be those who will drink/smoke to excess, but the majority of us who drink moderately will come to no harm through alchohol.. That can't be said about fags. It's like playing russian roulette with your own life and anyone unlucky enough to inhale the smoke.
