Hi

Will be our first time to the area, staying for a week in Almoradi in June, we have a car or are quite happy to take the bus and want to get the most out of our holiday as it is only a week.

After your wisdom and knowledge here,  are there any places that we really should make the effort to go and visit ?

If i had some ideas I can google and find out some more info and directions etc

thank you all very much

 Sue

Do NOT miss Almoradi's Saturday market, it's one of the best. It's all around church square radiating out down the roads & it's big ! Cafes are situated around the church square & down the roads from it. Often things are going on within the square on market day.

Try Cafe Vienna for friendly service, fantastic wcs & good meals & snacks. Standing with your back to the church door look across the square & slightly to the left there's a road with cafes down one side & market stalls down the other. Cafe Vienna is owned by two Scottish couples.

We go most Saturdays when in Spain.

If you love markets don't miss the one called Campo de Guardamar on a Sunday. It is massive. We walk to it, aren't WE the lucky ones ? Not only does 'our' market have so many stalls with cafes amongst them, it also has two lanes designated JUST for cafes down either side of it & run by many nationalities. So there's so much to see & do at 'ours'.

People have their hair cut there, you can book the free blanket trips, an ice cream van is there, places cooking chickens on spits, massive ovens cooking all meats & ribs & potatoes so you just need salad at home & you've a meal. One place sells a fresh chicken directly from the spit with a bottle of red wine (called Conde Noble which we buy at Lidl's for around 65c now) for 6€ ! It also stays open till well after 2pm. We love it !

Wednesday is Guardamar's town market just off the main street, by the Town Hall. That's a good one & combine it with going to have a drink/meal at a promenade restaurant.

Guardamar has a evening market which is lovely to stroll around & there are endless cafes & the like by it.

When are you over Sue ? We're over May 6th till June 12th.

It depends on what you like to do really.

We drove up Callosa 'mountain' and had a lovely walk by the small church and pine forest.

Guardamar is nearby with so many different facets. Sand dunes and woodland walkways, large clean beaches, commercial promenade with cafes and bars.

If you like shopping, drive down towards Torrevieja and vist Habaneras shopping centre where you can browse the shops and sit on the top floor in the sunshine enjoying a coffee. Carrefour is next door and has fascinating fish and meat sections to see along with a large electrical department and household.

La Marina is a quiet beach area with easy access. there is free parking in all of these places which is heaven after the UK.

Torrevieja sea front is a nice place to stroll in the evenings with many cafes and bars and a street market.

Santa pola is a little more Spanish and again has lovely beaches, a port and evening market stalls and fish market with weird and wonderful fish.

Elche has an old town area as well as the modern shops. It is crammed full of palm trees and parks. There is a small road train that does trips around a couple of the parks. The narrow streets and pavement cafes are lovely.

Will that do for now?

Laury

Excellent post, Laury. I particularly liked the We drove up Callosa 'mountain' and had a lovely walk by the small church and pine forest.'

(Not to mention meeting up with new forum friends )

Laury & I, having chatted on here for mebbee a couple of years, finally have the chance to meet up on May 28th.

My husband & I have become great friends with many forum posters, not just from this one but from more local forums too.

BTW Guardamar runs a little tourist train around the town & through the dunes. Sounds ideal especially if you have young children, they'd love that.

The following is taken from HERE The cyberia internet cafe website's very informative, well worth a long read.

There is however a tourist "train" which tours the roads of Guardamar del Segura - this only happens however mid-June to beginning of September (and may only be on certain days in the week) - the "train" runs from Engineer Mira all through Guardamar del Segura and if you can't ride a bicycle and are not up to really long walks then this a great way to get around and see a lot more of Guardamar del Segura. This tourist train is also used on the Guardamar Path of History tours.
For exact details about these train rides please contact the Guardamar Tourist Information Office.

Hi Nigela

I guess >>> click link >>> THIS IS IT

Does sound wonderful, just what we like. I will make notes, thanks Laury.

BTW we have a wonderful map that is very detailed, well worth buying. It's the Michelin 123 ZOOM one & goes as far north as just above Valencia & as far south as Cartagena. £4.99
