Does anyone know exactly what is involved and the cost?  I understand it is simpler that a car but would the bike have to be totally standard ie exhausts etc? Been told there is little or nothing to pay if the bike is under 250cc and only a bit more for bigger bikes.

any advice?

Thanks,

D

 hi

yes i have done it.

first thing is the bike in your name on the v5, if possible do that.

if not you will need a letter / contract to prove you have purchased bike along the original v5, the receipt for bike should show chassis number & reg. number.

you will then need to insure your bike is roadworthy & has a speedo that shows Kilometers per hour (odo is fine in Miles).

also your headlight must NOT swing to the left.

you will then need to get an engineers report (aprox €100), this has basic details of dimensions of weights / size of bike.

I did have a C of C but that was rejected by ITV station (!) because it did not show above.

You will then need to take all your paperwork to ITV station & have an import ITV, this is slightly more than normal (i think €70).

They will check, brakes, lights, horn, engine noise etc.

If past they will then issue you with the next set of papers you will have to go to the local vehicle tax office.

There is a sliding scale on bikes depending on size & age (i paid about 350 on a 1150 cc 7 year old bike).

your 250cc will be a lot less.

once you have paid that its off to trafico to get the rest of papers.

With papers you can then get your number plate.

Process is not too difficult but not overly cheap.

If i can help more let me know

Thanks for that......I dont have a 250 though...Thunderace 1000 / ZZR1100 / Vmax.  Will probably only import one of them and I guess the charges will be similar to yours or a bit cheaper due to being a bit older?

Yes it goes down for each year, so if older it will be cheaper.

My total cost for bringing bike down and putting onto spanish plates, and this includes everything, inc flight to get bike, fuel, hotel, tolls, insurance,  etc etc etc etc. was €1250.

If I did it again I would not pay someone to do paperwork for me (that cost €250 of above), I would give it a go myself.

Also would probably come a toll free route (€35) and shorter but stopped off at friends house bit of the beaten track which probably put an additional tank of fuel on.

just looking at my actual costs itv fee was 84, import fee 300,

Also forgot you will have to pay the local suma fee before you go to traffico on a large bike its about 120 pa, though i only paid half as it was for 6 months.

It was fun but tiring couple of days.
