Hi

The dishes should give you the full service from Sky, however you will need a set top box, if you dont wnat to pay anything you can get all the free channels ITV1,2 BBC 1,2 and about another 60 channels. But You can take out a contract just as in the UK, depending on which level you require. You will have to check if the wiring is already into your appartment, if not you will have to have it connected. Its not expensive. Hope this helps

John

Thanks for info and yes the wiring is in apartment, but does this mean that there is little point in installing a sky dish

Hi Tinto

There again it depends on Your community, A lot of communities dont allow the installation of private sat dishes. There are lots of companies in the Free papers that will set you up with sky, at the level you require. I believe that the signal in Southern Spain is weak and that is why the dishes are very large, smaller "UK" size ones may not work as well. This is only what I have heard don't take it as Fact.

John

Hi tinto    Regarding the dishes already installed  the dish must face 28 deg east ( Astra ) to pick  up the sky english programs , if the community dish is on 19 deg east  ( also Astra )  you will only get english news programs + Spain, Germany, France , the other dish  Digital + is Spanish . ( i think )  You can proberly install the dish on the roof it depends on com. rules you will need a dish no smaller than 1.4 mtrs. for good reception , sometimes you need your own tuner for a community system it depends how the system is set up.   We hope this explains the setup required for english  TV .  Best of luck  Rosi n

Your sky box will work in Spain.  Your dish is probably too small and you will need at least a 1.2m dish (UK generally has a 60cm dish or 80cm to 1m if you're in NI or northern Scotland) which will give you limited channels and will drop out at night.  You don't say where you are in Spain.  Bear in mind the further south you are, the bigger dish you will need.  1.8 or 2.1 metres may be necessary if you are on the CDS.  For Sky to issue you a card, you have to have a UK address as they won't send it to a an address in Spain even if you pay for it.  As to the legality, if you are using the card in UK and bring it to Spain for holidays, what's the problem?  It's only if you intend to use it all the time in Spain that it is frowned upon by Sky but can't see as how it would be "illegal".

Hi izzyinn     On the CDS and most of southern Spanish coast a 1.4 dish is OK  for SKY programs ,if you dont have a card you will loose some of the channels    ( mostly ITV. 4 & 5 )   as sky  are part scrambling these channels and thats why you need the card , if you need the card buy it in the UK  about £23 you can buy it in Sain but will cost much more . Hope this info helps out .             My husband is the expert on this and this    is only a message relay from him.    Regds Rosi n

Just to clarify the legality issue. Sky are only licenced to broadcast for the UK and Ireland. They therefore can't knowingly sell equipment or subscriptions for use in Spain. I've never heard of a private individual beibg prosecuted for viewing their output in another country.

Your plasma TV will work just fine but of all the current tellys  plasma are the most delicate in transport so you must ensure it is properly packed preferably in the original packaging and transported in such a way that it does not receive severe jolts.

John Kath thanks for your reply I take it from your reply that you have first hand knowledge that they work in spain. I am having it packed by a professional removal firm who have had thirty years in removing property to spain so I have every confidence they even have special packaging for plasma tv.s

Not first hand knowledge since we have not moved ours yet but know people who have and it was OK. Theirs was a Panasonic, make sure the removals firm have proper insurance and it covers Plasma TVs.

My neighbours brought their tv over from the UK (not a plasma) and they had to have the sat system connected via a Spanish DVD player.

You might find you'll have to do the same, something to do with compatability, I'm sure someone else can give the exact explanation.

i actually posted in another forum so i will post it here since this seems to be more appropriate. like others in this forum we have a relatively new TV set (Grundig widescreen) TV that we would like to bring from the UK to Spain.

we have had mixed responses as to whether or not it will work.  we will be connecting it to a communcal Sky dish as well as a Pioneer DVD player that we bought in spain.

many posters on this forum seem to indicate that it will work.

i would be grateful if someone could confirm that it will work and what we need to do to hook it up correctly,

many thanks
kerry

new here  and just seen this.

most new tv's especially lcd / plasma have the option to change their country settings.
this allows for
the sound for analogue spanish tv via aerial to work
digital spanish TDT to work correctly - uk tvs normally only scan to channel 68 - spain also uses channel 69!

any external appliances like dvds, sky boxes, or other satellite boxes should be connected to the tv via scart and these will work correctly.

hope this helps

Worth remembering is that youÄll also have to get the plugs changed from your english TV to you r spanish TV, cos they both use different plugs. Hope that helps! x
