We've been there.  We set up our business just over 2 years ago and it's been a lot of hard work!

If you've got any questions or useful information to share on this subject then either post them here or start a new thread.

I've been there too.
We have been here since January 2005, and only opened our doors for business at the end of September this year - hassles with red tape, buliders, phone companies etc!!

Fingers crossed it will all go well!!

Great!  It seems we have an IT expert amongst us!  It's always really handy to know an "IT person"....

Best of luck with your business (grovel, grovel)

Very best of luck JFJ and well done with persevering - so many give up and head back home so finger crossed you will be oneof the success stories. Shame you're in Almeria - our IT guy has just gine back to Blighty and not happy with his suggested replacement and when it comes to tech stuff I am a complete idiot - cant even work out how to get my chosen avatar on the site - actually I think the file size is too big but its probably that I am a dipstick

Thanks guys!

My boyfriend is the real "techie" - I generally run the office, talk to the customers and do all the initial trouble shooting. I worked in the IT industry for 6 years before coming here, so I know quite a lot but my boyfriend's knowledge of computers is unbelievable!!

If you do have any technical problems, let me know and I'll do my best to help! :)

JFJ,

Can I ask an IT question?

I have a laptop and have been told the back light has gone in the screen. They are saying it would cost 400€ to repair and suggest buying a new one instead for 900€.

Am I being ripped off for the repair or is it really this expensive? I think they just want me to buy a new computer!

Many thanks,

Hi Fibby,  Thanks for all that information today you are brilliant.  About your laptop my last laptop was beyond economic repair according to the shop I took it to mind you it was a few years old.  So they said they would do me a print out saying that it was beyond repair and to claim of my home insurance which I did. They paid out £800 pounds, which I was very pleased about considering I had just changed the home insurance to another agent. So of  I went and got myself a wireless Laptop. I must admit it was something I would not have thought about doing. So if it is beyond repair this is worth a try. Take care Pat

Hi Fibby,

In most laptops the backlight is included in the LCD assembly, and therefore when the backlight goes, the screen needs to be replaced. As I don't know the make and model of your laptop, I can't say if this is the case with yours.
The screen is the most expensive part of the laptop to replace, so 400€ sounds about right.

If you do decide to get a new laptop, consider buying it over the internet rather than in one of your local shops. There can be some good deals available online.

I hope this has helped.

I think in most cases it's never worth replacing the screen.  You can get such good deals on new laptops these days.  When I was in UK last month I bought a new laptop for 250 pounds in PC World!  It was the last one of a particular model that they wanted to shift.  It's not a bad spec either.  I don't think you can go very wrong at that sort of price.

Thank you all for you good advice.

I never thought the screen was the most expensive part!

Also, thanks for the insurance advice Pat & Roy, I think I will give that a try, mind you, I work and am insured with, one of the major insurers in the UK so will have to do it all "by the book", shame!

Have had a fantastic time here in sunnt Espania, a nice tan to take home too. We travel back tomorrow and I am crying already!

Hope I have helped all you El Rincon buyers in the Costa Blanca with the latest photos of your development and that beautiful pic of the sunrise yesterday.

Adios for now.........

Regards,

What Justin didnt say about his laptop was that he needs a golf buggy to go with it for the batteries!! LOL.

Fibby if its a laptop that you leave in Spain be careful about ordering the new one - especially on line. make sure you order XP or whatever in English not Español - also depends whether you want UK keyboard (£) or Spanish keyboard. Silly thinks and easy oversights. Dell prices about the same in Spain as Dell UK and they will do software in Ingles and keyboard Ingles but you have to specify - plus the back up software needs to be specified in English too. If you want the contact details for the English speaking part of Dell España (based in France would you believe) then let me know.

Glad to hear youve had a great time - mind you been lucky with the weather - mind the jungle juice and the marnie sarnies on the plane - Suwwy Bill not as amenable as Policia Local. Safe trip.

Hi Leigh you are quite right to remind us. Just sometimes the thread gets diverted off track with a bit of humour or another comment at the end of something else - you put it separately on the general chat and it has lost its relevance to the post it was in reply to. Forgive us old timers for getting sidetracked.

Personally speaking I enjoy the humour and i know if certain contributors are involved i will most likely be amused and, as important, they are usually the best informed on most matters.
