Everyone is going to have a different experience here, but you need facts. For accurate information go to angloinfo, or expat focus, UKinspain or similar sites for true facts. You could even ask the consul.

Thank you. I'll take a look.

The Consol didnt give me much info about where to go for NIE, but I have since been told that there is a police station in Elche that do NIE's.

Hi Claire - you will find that each area has a different set of rules about the NIE application process.  It is the National Police office which issues the form, so you should enquire at your local office.

In Orihuela it can take a month to get an appointment to apply for the form!  In Torrevieja you queue in the morning to get a ticket and when they have distributed a certain number of tickets they remove the machine - at least that is the system they used a few months ago.  In Alicante and in Cartagena you can get them much more quickly but you need to show evidence that you need the number - if you are buying a property then you will need to have a purchase contract which you will get when you pay your deposit.

Many people either use a company to do this for them, or give a lawyer a Power of Attorney, as it is such a hassle!

As for a good bank, they are all different and tend to prefer to give mortgages on their own repossessions at the moment.  It can take ages to get a decision too and they can change their mind after making you a firm offer!  We always recommend using a broker as they will know the current rates and maximum amount they will lend, as well as having a relationship with the local managers.

Good luck.

The national police station in Elche is on Calle Abeto on the same road as the hospital. There is a free parking space on the right just before the police station and, if that is full, there is a larger one just past the hospital with a walk of about 500 metres back to the station. You need to get there early to book in and take a ticket but they are pretty quick.
Depending on where you are, you can also use the town hall at Playa Flamenca but they start queuing there about 7 am. It's the Extranjero office there. Torrevieja and Alicante also issue them. Take a book.

For our clients that want NIE's we use the Elche Police station.

I use a lady that will go up there and queue for you and then when you arrive it is all prepared.

You leave here (Algorfa) at 9am -9.30am and are usually back by 12 with the certificates...she charges 75€ for this same day service and that includes the transport to and from Elche back to here or your Hotel.

What can be very tedious is in fact made very simple.
