Apparently Spaniards can claim dual citizenship if they declare their wish to do so within three years of becoming the citizen of another nation. I guess that this is a historic arrangement based on the political volatility of Spanish speaking nations that Spaniards emigrated to, Mexico comes to mind.

Sounds a good scheme, worth replicating?
Actually post war I think we had a similar scheme in the UK and non nationals had to regularly ( can't remember if it was 6 monthly or annually) report to the Police and demonstrate proof of work, accredited home address, for ten years before they were allowed citizenship.
I know that the Poles that fought alongside our troops in particular were highly thought of, good work ethic, great at integrating ( their Polish club had more British members than Polish).

The Spanish don't allow dual nationality. You must renounce previous nationality and swear an oath of allegiance to the King.
You can apply for citizenship after 10 years continuous residency.
You have to pass a written and oral test in Spanish and show knowledge of Spanish history and current affairs.
You have to demonstrate inclusion into local affairs such as committee or community work.
Unless you have Spanish parent or grandparent or come from certain S American countries or previous Spanish colonies.
The period of residency is reduced if you are married to a Spanish national.

Will Article 50 deny UK expats residing within the EU the right to claim EU citizenship, or will they have to become citizens of the EU country that they are resident in? This may have been covered, but if so I have missed it, would dual citizenship be an acceptable compromise?

Please get back on thread. Hephaestus is telling the truth. He asked us a long time ago now to change his username which we did. Hence if you go back far enough you will see edits with his old username. It is impossible for anyone but us to change a username. Please keep on thread.

I've contacted the mods and will believe what they say, I've never asked before but how can a member CHANGE a username without mod assistance and permission?

Looking forward, let's hope that we can ALL make our leaders (both in the UK and the European Union) more accountable to citizens' genuine needs and aspirations rather than allow them to create divisions that have sadly become all too apparent from recent postings.
I would now, post Brexit, ask the following questions :
Are the EU bureaucrats willing to review the wider perspective and recognise the need for radical reform?
Are the EU bureaucrats and Govt leaders willing to listen to the concerns of citizens and pursue policies that adequately address their concerns?
Are they willing to pursue policies that promote unity rather than divide?
Are they for instance willing to cooperate in trade agreements rather than pursue actions that further alienate?
Most importantly, are they willing to pursue regulatory and compliance policies that tackle the power of the Financial Institutions?
Are they willing to tackle the need for member states to adhere to the rule of law?
Are they willing to recognise inbuilt stability mechanisms designed to act as counter balance between member states rather than protectionist stance to the power house of Germany and the political elites of France?
Isn't it time that everyone looked to the wider picture and recognised the impact that austerity measures and failure to adequately respond to growing pressures have had (and continue to have) on all European members states?
Never forget that this was born from a Banking crisis with corruption/questionable malpractice and non compliance at its heart, requiring QE that left nations with unacceptable levels of debt that we had little option but to address. Exacerbated by unbalanced influence from powerful unaccountable financial institutions (Greece, Italy exposed to highly manipulative and questionable Banking malpractice to achieve EU accession, just as a couple of cases in point), large corporations abusing financial "vehicles" across EU members states as a means of avoiding tax, an inefficient and incompetent Union in its failure to recognise growing negative and divisive economic/social trends with bureaucrats that have not adequately responded to compromising effects on its citizens.
Nor recognise the impact of policies on its homeland member states (loss of skill sets to other member states, unacceptable levels of high unemployment, failure to adequately tackle non adherence to the rule of law and high levels of corruption, I could go on and on!) Also from a variety of internal austerity measures taken by individual members states governments devoid of necessary controls to respond adequately to the pressures from free movement policies, and left to respond without adequate forward planning or comprehension of how this would lead to a negative impact on the psyche of citizens who originally prided themselves on tolerance and inclusion.
Time for a wake up call and radical reform?
