My partner is moving out to Spain next week. She already has her social security number and her NIE number but is not yet working. Does this means she is entitled to free Spanish health care? And if she needed a doctor would she just show her social security document or does she need a card? If so how does she get it before she starts work?

Gracias,

Amatista

Hi amatista, your partner should have received a social security card, if she has not than she will need to go to the social security office and apply for one, assuming that these documents you have are old and not new i must inform you that social security is only valid for a certain amount of time after your last job.  She will be covered with an E111 which you can get from the post office until she can work again and pay for it again.

Thanks Joan. She went to social security office and told them she was looking for a job and they gave her a social security number there and then. Will she only get a card when she starts work?

Thanks,

Jane

Not sure when she gets her card, you can apply for you european medical card and this is just as valid, if you get one in the UK its valid for 5 years! That is what quite a few people do.

getting your healthcard is suprisingly quite easy, you simply need to registar at your local clinc. Simply need your NIE and your SS number and local pardon, go in takes about 5 mins and will arrive in the mail in about 4 weeks. Just a note that you have to go through your local clinic for all your needs they then refer you on.

Thanks Rob.  I have a feeling it might be a bit quicker in Madrid, but will give it a shot.

 Hi Roddy1

Thanks for the information I'll try to apply E111 health card online. I think it's a good idea.
