Unless the law has been changed,  which I doubt,  under an EU Directive,  all policies in the EU must provide minimum cover (third party) for the whole period of the policy for the whole of the EU. Thus a policy issued in UK on say 1st Jan will provide 3rd party cover until 31st Dec  for everywhere in the EU.

If you require more than 3rd Party then you must pay more and abide by whatever rules apply to that policy.

Not what my insurance company told me when I brought a car over from UK. 90 days at the minimum required cover in the country you were visiting so Spain was 3rd party even though my car had fully comp in UK.

If I wanted it to be fully comp they would charge extra but wouldn't go over 90 days. I think Saga does it for longer than that.

My Spanish insurance remains fully comp in any EU country and the breakdown cover is still valid as well.

LV do say that it's only £20 extra for 180 days EU cover, maybe you could ask for a quote for 90 days to compare with M&S and then challenge them about it if they are a silly amount more

Liberty Seguros do policies with a years green card so effectively giving you cover anywhere in the EU for however long you are there for

This is an extract from:   http://ec.europa.eu/finance/insurance/consumer/motor/index_en.htm

The directive:

  • obliges all motor vehicles in the EU to be covered by compulsory third party insurance (all passengers are covered, throughout the EU)

Yes, but as EU freedom of movement only applies for a period of 3 months it could be where the time limit kicks in.

The EU directive doesn't give a time limit, just that insurance issued in one country is valid in another. When we contacted Axa, they would only do it for 90 days, at the reduced 3rd party, as they said residency requirements then kicked in. To get fully comp for those 90 days was almost the same as our annual premium.

The Liberty Seguros insurance covers you for fully comp if that's what insurance you have, the car must of course be fully road legal in its country of registration

OK I thought I might avoid this explanation.

Some years ago, a friend wanted to bring her car to Spain from UK.  She was told she must pay extra for the green car and for 3rd party only cover.   After she had been here for a while she contacted the insurance company who told her that she had to buy a new policy to ensure she had 3rd party cover, which she did.

Subsequently I discover the EU Directive and I tried to get the police to prosecuted te company for fraud, in that they had given my friend wrong info and as a result she had paid for another policy.  The police would not prosecute but the insurance company paid compensation for the extra unnecessary cover she had bought and for her inconvenience, when I brought the Directive to their notice.

As I said, if the law has not change, which from the Directive I quoted lt has not, then the cover lasts for the whole period of the policy throughput the EU.

In Spain, as far as I remember,  throughout the 27 years I have insured vehicles here, a green card has always been issued as standard, with no extra charge,  when I have renewed my policy, which covered me for whole period  of the policy, for all the EU  and I believe a number of other countries too.

Just in passing one can legally leave say a UK reg vehicle in Spain permanently, regardless of ones right to live here, freedom of movement etc,  (so that’s a red herring) and  if parked on a road, it would need to be covered by insurance.

So does my insurance with Linea Directa. But I couldn't keep a UK registered car here for that long or a Spanish registered car in UK.

More down to the insurance companies on UK ones reducing the cover and charging extra than anything else, I think. Bit like the AA charging £130 for 2 weeks breakdown cover in Europe where my insurance covers it at no extra charge.
