Yes, SEPA transfers under a limit are free.

Unfortunately in Spain, due to the Notary process, its still not possible to put funds in place to buy a property by transfer - by that I mean you can't transfer funds to the Notary! All done by bank cheques or cash, or a mix of both

0.50% cost for bank draft - no cost for cash = 500 saving

If you have online banking and break down withdrawal transfers in to smaller chunks (under 50k€) you should be able to use SEPA (or the Single Euro Payments Area) to avoid these charges.

I think you are up a creek without a paddle on this one. The driver should of given you the voided receipts from his POS terminal.

Open a dispute with your bank, they should be able to identify the merchant details if the Spanish bank will provide them  - I'm sure they would have to provide them in the case of a dispute, they should be able to provide details (receipts) of an approved transaction. If not claim it back from your bank.

Why??

Because it is just a law of the land ! It applies to all non resident property owners not just the British! I would imagine the original thinking was  - if you want and can afford a second home here, you can afford the tax. It is a property tax, no more than that.

The 'news ' with this, will the current rate enjoyed by EU and EAA countries (20%) be increased to the rest of world rate (24%) for the British after brexit?
