Car Hire .. how do you get the best deal ?

We rented a car through EOS in November 2012 and it was allocated to DICKMANNS CAR RENTAL . Met at Alicante taken by mini bus 5 mins to office no problem . The car was in great condition and we paid as per the invoice form EOS. The weeks Hire came to about 70 Euros on a "bring back empty basis". I would reccommned Dickmanns Car Hire as a great service . However, trying to book direct with them looking at a future hire and the prices seem to have rocketed sky high ... Has anyone got advice for Murcia/Alicante Airports and how to get the best deal .
Is it best to book a couple of weeks before you go ??
