I read with interest all the the threads regarding bringing a UK car to spain.

We want to do this, we have a holiday home in Murcia and only want to take the car over W Reg Escort to use when we are on holiday, usually school holidays - total for the year 12 weeks.  The rest of the time it will be sat in a car park near the airport ready for us to pick up when we get to Spain.

Can anyone let me know the rules for the use of our car please?

Thanks

Jeanette

If you do that you will need to inform the DVLA that you have exported the car and then as it will not be registered anywhere you will need to register it in Spain..

Advice:  Don't make your life complicated,   sell the car in UK and buy a Spanish one here.

Thanks John for your reply.  We have thought of doing that, probably be lucky to get £500 for the car.  Also ready alot about how expensive cars are in Spain and you have to be careful who you buy from as you may inherit their debts on the car etc.

In Spain by law if you keep a car here for more than 6 months in any one year it HAS to be re-plated i.e. Spanish number plates. The cost of doing this will be about €700 to €800 once you have the correct lights front and back. In law in Spain you have to maintain tax, insurance and ITV (MoT) even if the car is off-road, i.e. sitting on your driveway or car park. Advice is don't even think about it!

I always allow at least £500 to £700 to actually bring a car over with the cost of ferry, fuel, tolls and overnight stops etc. Hardly seems worth bothering once you do all the maths!

Cars are not all that expensive, especially with the crisis.   As long as you do the transfer through a gestor you will have no problems with back debts etc.

I have a 1997 Toyota Corolla, from new, 70,000 Kms, never had to spend a penny on it, except servicing, everything original. If I were going to sell it I would be lucky to get 1,500 euros. It would cost you more than that to import your car and a lot of hassle.

Buy a car in Spain, or even look at the cost of hiring against owning, buying cost, transfer  fees, depreciation, servicing, tax, insurance, parking, vulnerability whilst parked,  etc.

Thanks Elaine, all advice is suggesting buying in Spain so think that is what we are going to do.  Next big thing is finding the time to go looking around Murcia, where our holiday home is, searching out a good car.

We do hire cars at the moment but over 12 months period we are spending alot of money - quote for summer is £500 without the added insurance, fuel etc.  We thought it would be cheaper to have our own car than having to keep hiring cars.

Thanks again

Jeanette
