I was watching spanish TV and Zapatero (president or king or boss of spain or something) was on Tv saying in spanish to an audience how all spanish people should be learning english and it was critical these days to know it fluently.

So an english reporter in the audience said to Zapatero. "how good is your english?"

To which he replied " No Hables Englais" (spanish for, i do not speak english)

To which the audience laughed rather a lot.

I didnt see anymore because i was rolling on the floor pissing myself laughing.

It should because it is an international language; more widely (widely I say) than any other language. It beats Esperanto hands down. My mother tongue is I am afraid yet another more or less dead language - Gaelic

Hopefully when Zippy does get around to learning English, someone will teach him to capitallize where appropriate.

Meanwhile, the Spanish for "I do not speak English" is actually "no hablo inglés".

(People in glass houses......)

Mike, look on the bright side - at least nobody is bastardising your mother tongue on public forums. Or speaking it wot like these rioters is, man. Init?

Cuando en Roma etc - in other words,  if you choose to live here then make an effort to learn the language.   It's part of the joy of a foreign country and its culture.  If not, go home!  Business/communications worldwide is another matter entirely and may end up being in English...or Chinese!

When I was thinking of living in Spain, full time, the first thing that I did was to learn Spanish - otherwise you don't really get to know what is going on around you!  This has certainly come in handy when travelling to some parts of Spain off the tourist trail.  When Spanish people come to England do they expect the English to speak in to them in Spanish???????

Has anyone been to Gibralter? Have you heard the locals their talking? They speak Spanglish ! Half their sentance is in Spanish and ended in English , it's brillient. I speak Spanish after 23 years here I should, but after visiting Gibralter I am enjoying my new found language of Spanglish.

Also have you noticed that Colombian Spanish is easier to understand than Spanish Spanish. They throw in English words all the time into their sentances.

So my message to all is if you have a little Spanish jsut speak as much as you know and when you get stuck just throw in a few english words. I am sure you will be understood as 90% of Spanish understand English from the movies they watch and the music they listen too.

So I think Spanglish is the way forward. So does Wikipedia by the way!

If I wanted a Spellchecker I would have used the button. I speak how I speak, I don't need some retired teacher correcting my spelling ta! I write how I speak with an accent.

Do something useful and leave me alone!

@casalinda: you must understand, just as Colombians speak some rare dialect of Spanish, so do the Torreviejans write a modified version of English.

Tee hee, Janie.

Willy is thinking of standing for office in the Spanish local elections, so I did give him a couple of names he might use on his posters.  He hasn't got back to me about them yet.

This is a refined forum  so I can't really put up any other names to suit.

Patricia

Sorry but when you speak a language fluently it is obligatory to learn it all and I know a lot worse hehe and you did ask and it would be rude to not answer. Anyway dont you think Pitulon Pajero has a catchy ring to it.,

Then Pitulon Huevon has a good sound to it.

When in his campaign 'campagna' play on words campana he would have something to ring out loud and that with which to ring it OUCH

By the way did you know Mitsubishi launched a car  in spain called Pajero and wondered why they could not sell it in spain

then of course there was the Opal Nova didnt sell well either lol
