Hi there. Has anyone tried to smuggle tennis rackets on with Ryanair? If one was to hold one in one's hand, would they try and slap you with the full charge for extra hand luggage? Or can you have the handle sticking out of a cabin suitcase? Anyone any experience of this? Thanks in advance.

Sorry, cricket bats, baseball bats, tennis raquets and any other item that may cause injury or be used as a weapon cannot be carried in the cabin. I think one sticking out of your holdall may be a giveaway. On the plus side, you can take a violin or cello if you book an extra seat for it.

What, you mean like that little kid who keeps kicking the back of your seat whilst his Mum orders her third half price if you buy two gin and tonic? Personally, I'd use it to bash the hell out of that speaker thst goes ta ta tara da da! When it lands on the time they've added half an hour on to anyway.

My cabin bag, which is the max size permissible, LOOKS like I could fit a tennis racket in ....? 55 cm you're allowed on Ryainair, and 56 on easyJet. But whether it's classed as a dangerous weapon I don't know. Maybe in Rafa Nadal's hands.

Good point Tamara. My suitcases aren't quite the maximum size, so I may have a bona fide reason to go shopping and spending. 'Im indoors will be 'cock-a-hoop.'

One kiddy had his childrens rackets confiscated at Leeds Bradford by security staff. They said they were "complying with government regulations." Ryanair website lists them as not permitted.

Ah. So they ARE a weapon of mass destruction :-(. So eggcup it's a matter of pay for a suitcase, or buy some out here. You'd get second-hand ones ludicrously cheap on one of the area-based buy & sell sites on Facebook.

I'd be mad to pay for a suitcase. Ryanair wants £50 for a 15kg and £70 for a 20kg. And I've checked the length of one of our rackets and it's about 70cms and the Ryanair maximum length of the cabin bags is 55. The kids will just have to have cheapy ones from one of the 'Chinos' or what used to be called the 'tiendas de veinte duros.'

Get your rackets from decathlon, their own brand "artengo" are pretty good quality at a reasonable price. I once tried to smuggle a racket in a holdall and was caught out  - it cost me 40 euros to take it to Spain.

I like the story about the smuggling and getting caught - it must have been embarrassing and annoying. I don't usually slag Ryanair off, because nobody forces us to get their 'plane tickets and they're so cheap - but when I had to press the button a couple of days ago, confirming I was paying with my credit card (my husband usually does it), I was so stressed at getting one little thing wrong, I could have had a heart attack. And the fact that you can't have a little fifteen centimetre piece of wood sticking out of your case is pretty petty.

I managed to smuggle a badminton racket in my hand luggage , while travelling with Jet2 last October. It was quite an expensive racket and I would have been devastated had it been confiscated at security, but I was lucky and got away with it. Do you think I should chance taking solar lights for the garden this summer?
