Now the sun has finally come out...... I have been able to strip down my two external sofa's and can see that the mould has not only permeated the sofa cushion covers, the cushions, the external cover for the whole sofa it has also got into the "skin" of the sofa too!

I have heard various tricks from baking soda, alcohol, bleach (!!) so if anyone has the same problem or knows the best way to remove and also how to wash the cushion covers in the washing machine that would be a great help.

Incidentally, I cannot wash the cushions themselves in the machine as they have a feather interior.

All suggestions eagerly welcomed!!!

I think the best thing is to hoover it then wash it with a weak fairy liquid solution and if possible, put it out in the sun to dry.

We took our sofa outside to prevent spores spreading. We then hoovered it down as much as possible,  washed with mild detergent, followed by an anti fungal spray. We then dried it thoroughly.

Hi,

I agree with Dave, Milton sterilising solution is a great alterative to bleach and this should get rid of the mould.

Good luck

Simone

Well thank you all who have replied and mentioned Milton Sterlising Fluid!

Before I go and buy vast quantities, can you please advise me do I put it on neat onto the frame and the cushions?

With the washable cushions, should i put it on neat and then just wash on a mild wash using gentle detergent?

Hi Sam,

I just read up about Milton, just to double check, and the best way to use it is to dilute the solution. If used neat it will have the same affect as bleach and discolour the fabric, as it is a very mild bleach anyway. So maybe just try a little and dilute well :) Unless your sofa and cushions are white, then dont dilute as much ;)

Hope it works out for you :)

Simone
