I just love this website. My husband and I are hoping to retire to Spain in 2009. However, we are quite nervous about buying property for two reasons really, one we may not settle (which I doubt) and two we don't want all of our capital tied up because of the inheritance laws. We would ideally like to rent property but the problem is that we don't want a furnished property and looking on the internet, it would appear that most if not all rental properties are furnished. We really love Cuidad Quesada or Guardamar. My question is are we looking for something that doesn't exist?

I am no expert in long term rentals but I suspect that they are available locally, so you need to go over and start searching

A lot of the rentals on the internet are short/ medium  term

I appreciate your concerns but perhaps you should rent short / medium term say for 3/9 months [ just come back for UK summer] in a furnished property and then get some experience of living in Spain and you may find buying with the proper advice is Ok for you

Renting long term and taking your furniture over also involves all the regulations and factors you have to consider for being resident in Spain and of course you will have to make sure that you get a lease of a secure length

I understand that leases of more than 11 months have problems for landlords so you may be restricted to this length

To buy a decent property prices start at circa 104.000 € for 2 beds

Hi Cazzag, you could always suggest to the landlords to remove the furniture from the place you want and give you a lower rental price.  There are still some who have unfurnished long term rentals but I think these are more likely to be new builds that have been built with the sole purpose of being rented out and so they have never been filled with the owners furniture.

You will find an unfurnioshed property without too much difficulty for all your stuff. The contracts as Rowlands says tends to be 11 months, but many landlords will extend this at the end of the term and with so many units lying empty I doubt you will have a problem. They just want to ensure the rent is paid on time.

Once you are out you will find out where you want to live and maybe at first its better to bring your stuff over and pay for storage - then you can rent and move around at ease until you feel settled.

Its easy though to fall into the trap of liking where you rent and not buying! I did this when I first came here, then went through a divorce and couldnt afford to with prices going as mad as they have done, so just watch out for that one

It is possible to find places where you could house sit, regarding long term rental it is difficult even if lease is for one year and the landlord keeps renewing it is unlikely that the landlord will rent out for more than 5 years total
