After watching Living in Spain channel last night about setting up dry gardens I was particularly interested in possibilities as we will not be living permanently for a while in our new house. They used succulents mainly varieties of sedum. They said that they required little or no watering. Does anyone have any advice or would we be wasting our money?

Interesting thread, I hope in time, as we have same concerns.

Look at this site http://www.dryscapes.eu/ and http://www.dryscapes.com/

This programme is, presumably, what you watched. http://www.livinginspain.tv/spanishgarden/episodes.htm

Hi Lifeline,

We have plants on our roof terrace in Spain.

We chose mainly cactus and succulents.

They have survived for the last 3 summers, but, I must say that there have been times when we have been away for say 12 weeks, that they have looked a little sad.

But, given a big drenching, they have perked up again.

You could of course install an irigation system on a timer, but remember, water is precious on and costly in Spain!

There are some colourful cactus and succulents to be had, just watch out for the spikes!!!

regards,

Hi,

FibbyUK and Morerosada,

Thank you for your replies. The website recommends watering in for a few months presumably to establish them and I'm sure the rain that comes infrequently would help. Will give this a try but can't wait to have blooms all year round like bouganvilla that we saw when we were there last week even in November!

HI, succulents are great in Spain. we grow lots of things but these are the best, NEVER FAIL!
We visited dryscapes (those people on the telly!) and they were super. We we filled our boot for 130 euros! Only one plant died, but thats because tony dropped it!!!
The sedums mentioned before are fabulous. Water them and they grow really fast. They flower too.
We bought lots of Cacti at the garden centres, but these little 60c plants keep dying.
Any ideas why?
