My friend has had a new calentador installed. He has natural gas supplied in the apartment block with large gas bottles. The calentador is an Ariston Blu Control 11l. When he switches on the hot water the gas ignites but the flame is yellow and seems to envelop the heater unit. Everywhere is black with I guess soot - even the external outlet outside is black. Has anybody got any ideas?

Hola, has this "fault" always been the same since it was installed? If so, you would be best to call the person who installed it to fix it (free of charge). Hopefully the gas man is an authorised gas installer, if not go through the company that supplies the gas. Good luck.

Morlandg. Tell your friend not to use the appliance until a qualified person fixes  it.  It might kill them in it’s present state.

Extract from internet:-

Carbon monoxide (CO) is poisonous. CO is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas that can make you sick or, under some circumstances, cause death. Carbon monoxide occurs when fuel does not burn completely. To avoid CO hazards, make sure your appliances are properly installed, cleaned, maintained and vented.

The sources of carbon monoxide can include improperly vented cooking and water heating appliances, auto exhaust, blocked chimney flues and malfunctioning fuel-burning appliances.

Indications that carbon monoxide may be present in your home or building include the following:

  • Black soot on or near registers, flues, furnace filters, burners or appliance access openings;
  • Condensation on windows or interior walls (condensation on widows can also be caused by humidifiers or vaporizers);
  • A yellow flame (instead of a blue flame) on appliance burners;

Hi from a gas safe registered inspector first of all natural gas does not come in bottles it sounds to me that you are using a water heater that is for use with natural gas not bottle gas if you check the manufacturing data plate it will have the letter N that tells you it is suitable for natural gas or the letter L for bottle gas any gas installer would have done this simple check before the installation .
