The "shell suit" trash tourists have started to arrive!!!!!!!!!

The British Council recently asked young adults in Brazil, China, Germany, India and the U.S. to choose the worst characteristics of people in the U.K., and here are the – sometime surprising - results.

When it comes to Brits' worst characteristics, drinking too much was the top answer of those surveyed by the British Council. Some 27 percent said this was the most unappealing habit of people in the U.K., and this percentage rose to a whopping 34 percent among people who had actually visited the country.

Close on the heels of binge drinking was bad eating habits, which a significant minority of those questioned - 23 percent – named as Brits' most unappealing characteristic.

Some 22 percent of those surveyed said British people were "too nationalistic", which was named the nation's third most-unappealing trait. This characteristic was closely followed in the rankings by related issues of "ignorance of other cultures" and "intolerance towards people from other countries".

Very interesting - I would like to read the whole thing if you have the link.   But surprising - no.

I read a similar article quoting the British Council survey of 5000 people aged 18-34 in Brazil, China, Germany, India and the US. Whilst the figures that Mickeyfinn quoted were accurate he "forgot" to mention that 46% praised our good manners, 37% said that we were educated and skilled and 31% said that we are friendly! Make of that what you will.

Yes there were positive opinions as well. The thread is entitled 'shell suit trash', a tad immotive but we all know what it means. I'm sure even they have positive qualities somewhere but don't often display them.

(With respect!) How very dare the with the exception of perhaps the Germans the others complain about british eating habits, at least we use cutlery and not our fingers well most of us any way and leave the crockery on the table at the time of consumption.  Only a jokey comment but im sure col. Huffington smyth of Hampshire would be penning to the editor of times if he read the report!!!

Since when was using cutlery a sign of good manners - not all see normaility that way

How many people in UK eat fish and chips aout a packet, pizzas with their fingers etc etc etc

I do not think it is not just about what some see as table manners it is the way a lot of peopel eat, speed , nosiy, greed etc and what they eat

For example how about the shell suit brigade behave at all inclusive holidays (and other buffets) - they use cultery , tables and plates yet.................

bad news they are back!!!!

Noise last night (this morning) at 3am (woke us up) whilst the kids carried the drunk parents home was shocking - no use calling the police!!!

Now the music has started, the screaching and cackling

Do they really think they are being funny / clever or just simply prattish ex pats embarrasing the good name of the human race

Although we are not residents we never experience anything like this, but having said that there is nothing to attract the yob culture where we stay. Holiday resorts attract holiday makers of all shapes and sizes, if you don't want to experience the excesses of the Brit abroad, you should buy in a residential area. 

When we, as tourists, arrive at our rental villa situated half way up a mountain in La Fustera, the noisiest residents are usually two Spanish guys who have all night party's at their family holiday villa. As for 'shell suits' I recall having a great day with my son at Sir Bobby Charlton's Soccer School, strangely enough he was wearing a shell suit, never judge a book by it's cover.   

That wasnt a shell suit Bobby was wearing it was an incontinence suit  up the blues
