Reminds me of a study I saw in Scientific America. They wanted to study pessimists - to see how unnecessarily negative they were. So they got people in a controlled environment and measured how realistic the pessimists expectations were, compared to 'normal' people. Turns out it's the 'normal' people who have unrealistic expectations, whereas the pessimists were more accurate!
I'm sure I've simplified things somewhat, but that was the gist.
