wi-fi extenders

I was wondering if anybody had any experience with a device called a wifi extender. Basically it is device that you can plug into your laptop or computer, to vastly increase your wifi signal range.

remember also that wifi is a two way signal, meaning a signal booster would need to be fitted to both the transmitter and the receiver

No this device is basically an amplified aerial which increases the strength and range of a wifi connection.

I have a Realtek USB wireless LAN, a small dongle that connects to USB port & you then attach a small antenna (6 inch) or buy a larger one to connect to it (about 14 inch). This does increase range considerably both in & out, cost about 15 quid in UK.

What range do you receive with the 6" version. I have seen some advertised in sizes from 6"aerials - several foot long masts, dishes.
