Hello,

i am currently 20 weeks pregnant and travelling to Seville soon. I'm concerned that I'll be out of my comfort zone and have no idea about food hygiene standards in Seville. Should I assume it's like the UK and just avoid the regular not allowed stuff? Or should I be more vigilant while eating out in Seville? Is dairy pasteurised like in the UK? Could someone please shed light on food standards in restaurants/hotels? I'm terrified I will end up catching toxoplasmosis or listeria over there and harming my baby to the extent it's really ruining the trip for me. I'm even dreading it now. Am I over reacting? I read news about food poisoning in Spain and was just wondering if it's blown out of proportion? Please reassure a terrified pregnant lady. Thanks!

Hand washing after using the loo, petting dogs etc does not seem to be a priority in some places

also, in supermarkets they don't always wash their hands after touching raw food,  before handling cooked meat.

dont be afraid to ask them to do so.

check the toilets before deciding to eat in a restaurant- that should give you a clue as to hygiene standards.

Hi.

I served in the military for a long time and got used to eating almost everything that walked crawled and climbed trees, been back and forth to Spain for many years, always eat out, not once have I had any form of food poisoning in Spain, or with the other rubbish I have eaten, but in the UK yes I have, even to the point that fish and chips can get to me here now. Had a so called fresh made sandwich in a UK airport once and boy did we suffer later, eat every time while waiting at the airport in Spain, no problems....No more in UK airports.

I don't drink the tap water in Spain but do brush my teeth with it, I do in the UK but thats only because I have grown up with it, I don't touch toilet door handles If can help it here, and in Spain, I wash my hands as and when needed as you should do.

I / We have only been to one bad restaurant in Spain, it's still open but I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

Chances are you will go to a dirty place at least one or twice, don't go back to them like you would here in the UK, be aware where ever you go.

Don't worry about the hygiene in Spain, be aware of it in the UK these days.

Hi,

Don't worry at all about Seville. IMO, it has some of the best restaurants in the world. I've eaten out there probably hundreds of times, and only once had a bad meal, and never food poisoning.

In general in Spain, the food is cooked is extremely fresh. You generally don't find people cooking with frozen/processed foods (except in touristic places or kebab shops).

Some things to be wary of though are:

1) Jamon (Spanish Ham) is generally served fresh. It's salted, but theoretically can contain live parasites (although several doctors have told us its actually an urban legend).

2) Steaks are often served raw-ish. You'll need to ask if you want them cooked through.

3) The usual guidance about fish still applies (although again the fish used will generally be extremely fresh, even in Seville).

4) In general most cheeses are pasteurised. However, in some restaurants they will have specialist cheeses which may not be. It's always best to ask before ordering.

5) Avoid empty or dirty or places in very touristic locations (such as those around the cathedral). It's almost always best to eat in places which are packed full of Spaniards.

6) There are many professional establishments in Seville that really take pride in their work, and have worked hard to build names for themselves, and are very knowledgable about food. If you tell them you are pregnant they will often go out of their way to help and offer advice.

7) I wouldn't recommend going in Feria if you are pregnant (if thats when you are thinking of going). The food control in the casetas (i.e. the dance/beer tents) is not the same as for restaurants.

If you want I can recommend you a list of places to eat?
