Arriving at Santander and driving to Murcia

We are arriving by ferry via Portsmouth Santander in a hired van with personal effects - what can we expect in the way of customs formalities?
Also we intend to drive overnight to Murcia, any recommendations for the best route? We did the reverse route some years back and could not find the ring road in Madrid and went well out of our way.
Also as we are driving overnight will we find any petrol stations open?

we are doing that this sunday past Murcia to near San javier we expect the journey to be about 8 1/2 hours 530 miles thereabouts we are using the Michelin route from Plymouth to Santander.
