Whilst most people don't like confrontation, there is something satisfying about having your first argument in Spanish.  I had my first one, aged 22, in a Madrid market.  I had asked for a quarter of queso manchego, which for argument's sake might have cost 2 euros 50, and the woman cut the cheese and it came to nearly five euros, because she had gone much closer to the half kilo.  Being poor, I just couldn't afford to buy so much and felt cheated too, like I was being tricked into buying more than I needed to.  I told her in my simple Spanish that I didn't want that much and she launched into some incomprehensible, fast Spanish.  I remember going red and feeling upset and  I don't remember if I bought the cheese or not, but I knew that I'd achieved something at any rate; I'd had my first argument in Spanish.

Can you remember when you first managed to get your point across in a similar way in Spanish and how did you feel?

Yes, similar to yours. It was really early on when my Spanish wasn't so good, and we were having a menu del día for €9. Well when it came to pudding, we both wanted flan, but they didn't have it. So we asked what they did have, and he reeled off quite a long list. We chose, ate it, and asked for the bill. Turns out he'd offered puds that weren't in the menu del día, so we were charged full rate for everything, about €16 each (about 7 years ago). So I had to argue with the owner, and try to explain that the young waiter had offered these puds without saying it would change the billing system. We got the bill reduced, though I'm not sure how!
