Copy of an email just received from Flybe about APD Taxes...

Being the cynic that I am I dont think the UK Gov will do a damn thing about it but you never know...

Join the campaign to make UK aviation tax fairer

Flybe is proud to operate more domestic flights than any other airline. Our services help drive the economies of the UK regions at a time when they need all the help they can get.

However, passengers departing from UK airports continue to pay the highest levels of tax in Europe and we'd like your help to tell the Government that this is not right. Air Passenger Duty (APD) - a tax charged on all passengers departing from a UK airport - was first introduced in 1994 with a £5 rate for flights within the UK/EU and £10 elsewhere. Since then, it has seen an increase of 160% since 2007, with a one-way domestic journey now being taxed at £13 per passenger.

The tax is particularly punitive for UK domestic passengers as they have to pay on both legs of their journey because APD is a departure tax. What that means is that someone travelling between say, Belfast and Manchester or Edinburgh and Southampton gets stung twice by the taxman.

We don't think that's fair and that's why Flybe, along with over 30 other leading travel organisations, is supporting the campaign 'A Fair Tax on Flying' calling on the Government to make UK aviation tax fairer.

If you think the same as us, you can show your support by clicking here to send a letter to your MP that has already been put together by the campaign. You might also want to add a sentence as follows: 'I think it is particularly unfair that domestic passengers have to pay APD twice as this is having a detrimental impact on the UK regional economies'.

Don't worry if you don't know who your MP is - the template will sort that out for you. There's also a Facebook page through which you can show your support and leave comments.

Please join the campaign - sending an email to your MP only takes five minutes through the 'Fair Tax on Flying' site and the more people that do this, the better chance we have of the Government listening.

Thank you.

The Team at Flybe.

Hi Foxbat
Interesting……………… looks like all the budget airlines are looking to save money to stay competitive, but the line must be drawn somewhere, and I think it’s now. Look at the recent Ryanair episode below, think I’d rather pay a few quid more ‘cost there ain’t no filling stations up there!

Ryanair has admitted that three of its planes issued Mayday calls within minutes of each other after running low on fuel on July 26th The flights were diverted to the Valencia airport after thunderstorms in Madrid and all 3 aircraft landed safely.

Spokesman Stephen McNamara confirmed the low-fuel emergencies to the Sunday Independent newspaper
Pilots working for Ryanair are under strict instructions to put no more than the minimum amount of fuel necessary for the journey in the tank, and any quantity above this has to be justified in writing.    According to the captain of Ryanair's base at Stansted number two on the management team - Shane McKeon: "There are still a small number of pilots who seem to have a problem with company procedures."Some of the explanations given by pilots for filling up with excessive fuel are unacceptable," stated McKeon.
"The most unreasonable excuse of all is that they like to land with three tonnes of fuel” This is not Ryanair's company policy; it is totally unacceptable and it is not what they are paid to do," concludes McKeon.

Strange this, another gripe from customers complaining about Ryanair policy, but the thing is ALL aero company has a similar policy so i dont see the issue other than scaremongering.

According to the captain of Ryanair's base at Stansted number two on the management team - Shane McKeon: "The most unreasonable excuse of all is that they like to land with three tonnes of fuel” .

Consider it, if you loaded your car with 4 adults, their baggage then put a trailer or caravan on the back, what would the fuel consumption be? It is the same with an aeroplane fuel economy drops with ecessive weight, so that why your luggage is weighed. Also if the aeroplane is carrying excessive weight your luggage capacity is reduced, and more fuel used, so the normal amount carried is calculated  for the total needed for the trip, with a small margin extra added on.

Woodbug, you quote  that, "after running low on fuel on July 26th The flights were diverted to the Valencia airport after thunderstorms in Madrid and all 3 aircraft landed safely." Would this be due more to the bad weather causing an airborne delay for all three due to exceptional circumstances rather than any fault on Ryanairs part? I would consider thunderstorms to be rather out of the norm.

You would get the same from any air company, as they dont want to haul excess weight, and have systems in place to compensate for any problem, this is why the flights were diverted to Valencia due to the weather.
