With more than 4 million people unemployed in Spain, in Madrid today the unemployed will try and form the longest unemployment queue to set a world record, around 5 km long.

It's a form of protest against the government's recent benefits cuts for the long term unemployed.  A huge number of long term unemployed now receive nothing in the form of any benefits at all.

People are claiming that we haven't seen the worst of it yet as hundreds of thousands of people now have no money coming in at all.

This is going to be one tough year for Spain.

I wish eveyone well in the protest in Madrid and hope that it may lead to something.

Justin

Dreadful state of affairs, but unfortunately the sign of more and worse things to come throughout Europe.

At least the unions over here have a little more power than in the UK. Not that the government will do anything of course. As we all saw recently with the Air Traffic Controllers dispute they have a universal answer to anything that threatens public services; put the antagonists under military rule under threat of up to 15 years imprisonment and forfeiture of their homes .

And, its not just the PSOE...

Madrid City council which is staunchly PP have decided that the firemen (bomberos) are earning too much...Seriously 40K Euros per year where around 40% of that is involuntary overtime...

Politicians...yeuch!

"Politicians are like seagulls. They arrive from out of nowhere in a fluster, squawking, sticking their beaks in.... crapping all over everything and then flying off leaving a mess."

"Politicians are like nappies / daipers...They should be changed frequently, and for the same reason."

Billy Connolly: 'Anyone who wants to be a politician should be automatically barred from being one.'
