We are doing our inspection visit in June and want to sort out the NIE numbers at the same time. Our solicitor has told us he will come and help us for 300 euros and he thinks we will need his help because it is a difficult process to understand if you don't speak spanish. He is also telling us we have to go to the Subdelegacion del Govierno in Almeria City and I thought you could apply in any local police station. My question is, can it be easily done without a solicitor being with you to translate and is it possible to apply at the police station in Vera (assuming there is one!)

We are being taken to Almeria City next week to sort out our NIE numbers. We are being taken by MRI, the agents that we bought through. There is no cost involved so 300 Euros seems a bit steep.

Unless the process has changed in the last few months, there is no need to go to Almeria and certainly not to pay out those outrageous sums of money.  We visited Thalassa in January.  Our agent, Medsea, took us into Vera town to a notary and we paid 3 Euro each for our NIE numbers.  We were in the notary's office for 5 minutes in total, they photocopied our passports and took the money.  The NIE details were then forwarded to our solicitor.

I have also read on earlier posts that someone went to Spanish embassy/consulate here in the UK (i.e. day trip to London) and paid a little bit more than that but certainly nowhere near the prices you quote.  I also know that Spanish police stations have something to do with the process but presume the notary's office took care of this detail for us before forwarding the details to our solicitor.

I have spent a lot of time reserching this one and have spoken to the spanish consulate in manchester, as they call it they act as a postal service for applicants and will sort out NIE applications from this end. They cant issue them directly but  post your application to madrid on your behalf, the process can take up to eight weeks but its a lot cheaper than having to go out and do it. The application form is on the consulates website in pdf format with translation to fill it in, its a very simple form

Hi All

The law changed around March time, you can no longer use a notary or apply at a local police station, you now must attend in person in Almeria or apply through the consulate in the UK.  I would recommend you get your solicitor or agent to check the application is correct before you present it at either location.

We obtained our NIE's last August via the Consulate in London. There is also a consulate in Manchester. The process is (was) fairly simple and instructions/links to forms can be downloaded from the consulate website at

http://www.maec.es/Consulados/Londres/en/MenuPpal/Servicios/Legalizaciones/nie_legalisations.htm

We eventually got our NIE's about 2 months later

Its not a quick process using this method. Doing it on the ground out in Spain is probably much quicker.

Regards

Andrew
