Got a bit of a techy question. Order telephone and internet and installation went well expect for one thing, they gave me a single port router rather than a WiFi router. I called Telefonica to order one and for what ever reason they won't sell me one. So I did some checking and several friends should be as simple as buying a WiFi router and running the setup wizard.

I guess you can see where this is going, ran the set up wizard and it won't connect.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Assuming that you will have Telefonica ADSL with a dynamic IP address, then the settings for your router should be entered in the setup wizard as follows...

PPPoE  with encapsulation LLC

VPI 8

VCI 32

Username adslppp@telefonicanetpa

Password adslppp

DNS1 Server 80.58.61.250

DNS2 Server 80.58.61.254

YES YES YES I have internet, or more correctly WiFi.

We've got several computers plus the Wife's work one and it was a major pain sharing one port!

I called Telefoncia Tech support several times to get that information but I never got everything I needed

thanks Rob

Hi All

Wonder if anyone can help me too please? We have an Orange Livebox which has work fine for months. Suddenly our telephone has stopped working? The internet is fine, the light saying the telephone is working is on, the phone is connected but I just have no dial tone and if you call my number it goes straight onto the Orange answering service? I tried the actual telephone in a friends house and it is working fine so could it just be a bad connection in the Livebox and I need a new one or is there something else it could be? Would like to try any other option before I have to call Orange with my minimal Spanish!

ANy help would be great and sorry for butting into someone elses thread!

Hi EPM

If you phone has ever worked you would have had a ADSL filter, its a liitle thing pluged into the phone socket that in turn the phone lead plugs into!!, Thats me done with this one. LOL

The cable from your Livebox will plug into a phone socket, via the filter. You have to have an adsl filter to separate the adsl signal from the telephone signal. Of course, to make things more difficult, you could have a filtered faceplate which has two plug sockets, one for the line to the Livebox and one for a telephone.

If the phone is plugged into the Livebox then this suggests that it is the Orange second line service that is involved here (i.e. normal telephone connected to Livebox to make calls over the Internet, e.g. VOIP calls, and therefore discussions about ADSL microfilters are probably irrelevant, unless of course normal Internet access is not working also in which case a microfilter could be the problem.

In any case, an ADSL modem/router needs to be connected directly to the telephone line and not through a microfilter.  It is all other telephone devices, including phones, computer modems and fax machines that need to be connected through a microfilter to avoid interfering with the ADSL signal.

Probably the Spanish Orange Livebox setup is similar to that in UK and so you could try the UK online support website.  For example the site gives the following help regarding the second line service.....

If you're having problems receiving calls using the second line service, this article will hopefully allow you to pinpoint the cause of the error.

First of all, ask yourself:

  • has the service ever worked, or is this a new problem?
  • does my broadband service work, eg can I connect to the Internet?
  • has anybody changed the way the Livebox is set up, eg unplugged the phone?
  • if we've sent you a new Livebox, the second line service will need to be activated again before you can use the service
  • is the @ light on the Livebox still solid and is the telephone light on, or flickering?
  •

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with you here. The router cable cannot be connected directly to the phone sockets as it uses a RJ11 conector which is too small. ADSL filters plug directly into the socket and have two outlets, one for the telephone/ fax/ etc and one for the router cable connection.

Sorry but I have to disagree.

What you are describing (as in your picture) is a UK ADSL microfilter.  This has a BT (white) plug to plug into the wall socket and two outlets,  one is a BT type white socket which is filtered for the phone and then a second RJ11 socket, unfiltered, for the ADSL modem/router.  If you are in UK, you are quite correct in saying that the ADSL modem/router must connect through this microfilter using the small RJ11 connector and the telephone should be connected using the larger BT white connector.

Here in Spain telephone wall sockets are a standard RJ11 connector and therefore the ADSL modem/router should be connected directly to this RJ11 wall socket and any telephones should be connected through microfilters.  Microfilters here in Spain have standard RJ11 connections at both ends not like the one in your picture.

I originally had to plug my phone into the connector in the wall and use a fixed code before dialing until orange switched over from telefonica. When it was switched I was told plug plug the phone into the actual Livebox and the livebox into the connector thing in the wall. This has worked fine until the other day it just stopped. The time and date etc. are still lit on my phone and the light goes on when i pick the phone up but I have no dial tone and cannot make calls. If I call my number it goes onto answer machine?

I have 3 red lights lit on my livebox, @, on/off, and the pic of a telephone so I have no idea what to do? I called Orange and explained the problem but they refused to speak to me until I get a fluent Spanish speaker to call them. (which is a problem as I can't make calls from home so I have to ask someone to spend thier own money to make the call for me!) It is frustrating because when they originally called me to offer me the service they spoke in perfect English so they must have a department for sales that can speak to me but as soon as I am paying them I cannot get any help!

I am very clever and got very technical to fix it.

I switched off the livebox and switched it back on and hey presto! I now have my phone back!!!

Lol, should have tried that in the first place,i've had no phone for a week!

Thanks for the help everyone, sorry i'm such a technical loser!

Ah, the good old reboot system trick, forgot about that .

Now I assumed that ADSL worked the same Worldwide (never assume anything as you make an ASS out of U and ME!! Thanks Benny Hill ). Time to admit I may have been incorrect .

Closer investigation, purely to satisfy my curiosity lead me to this installation guide for Telefonica routers. It does indeed show a unfiltered signal being sent to the router, so how is the signal split for the router to be able work correctly?

Marksfish, it's quite simple really.

The ADSL router RJ11 connector goes directly into a Telefonica wall socket (also RJ11).  Then all other telephone devices like phones, fax machines or computer modems need to be connected through a microfilter to avoid them interfering with the ADSL signal.  In effect these other devices are split from the main telephone line by the filters.

Telefonica microfilters are simple devices with a single RJ11 plug on a short lead at one end, and an RJ11 socket to plug the phone etc. into.  If you need to plug the ADSL router and a phone into a single wall socket, you use a small two-way adaptor to plug the two RJ11 plugs into a single wall socket.

ADSL routers supplied by Telefonica come with three microfilters (the maximum you are able to connect on a single line) and you put them on everything connected to the line, apart from the router itself.   The ADSL router is always connected directly and unfiltered, whilst all other devices are filtered.

Sorry, Rob in Madrid I understand you sent me a PM days ago but despite two attempts to ask the admins to enable Private Messages I still cannot read your PM which is sitting there and therefore cannot send a response or send a PM to you either.

Since I cannot put a URL or email link in any postings either, I shall just go and feed my ADSL pigeons!!
