We are planning to visit this area in early April. The purpose of the visit is to check out a  rental ( 3 months) for later in the year as a taster to see if it is the right area for us to ebentually buy. Does anyone know of any good rental properties in the area or have any suggestions for towns or villages we should check out as potential locations for a longer stay.

It depends on your budget and whether you prefer more Spanish areas and less touristy areas. I really like Nerja but it is very busy in the summer and difficult to park and property is a lot more expensive than Almunecar and Salobrena. Salobrena is the more 'Spanish' town and probably the cheapest. During which three months are you intending to stay? Many owners would not want to do a three-month let over the summer months when it is possible to get high weekly rents from tourists.

We prefer a more Spanish area that is less touristy. Our plan for an extended let is to experience life in Spain outside the holiday season so probably something like ( Nov- Feb, or  March-May). he budget for buying will depend on whether we decide to permanently re-locate in which case our main home will be in Spain and we will get a small place in UK, or we may opt for keeping our UK home and buying a small 2 bed house or apartment in Spain. So we keep the option of extended stays in both places as we have taken early retirement we have no commitments to tie us to one place. From what we have seen of Salobrena it looks like the kind of place we like. Although, for a longer stay somewhere inland within a 30 to 40 minute drive of the coast might be a good option.

I was in Salobreña today - had lunch by the beach. A few people around but basically - DEAD. Tumbleweed town. Personally, I'd go out of mind somewhere like that in winter. But that's just me. wink

Yes, it can be pretty dead on the seafront in winter; lots of Spaniards have flats there which they only use in August. But the town itself isn't dead in winter. Almunecar would be a bit busier in the winter though and I imagine there will be loads of flats to choose from for a rental in the winter. The main thing is to make sure that the insulation and heating is up to scratch as those of us who have spent many winters in Spain know that it can be freezing indoors in winter even if it's sunny outside.
