if I post on a thread initially I am emailed when others post... then suddenly nada ....but threads continue.

Yes, I get that. i think it says something in the email about how you won't get further notifications on that thread until you've commented again, or at least until you've been to look, or something! I think you can adjust whether you get emails or not.
