Legal tip 648. Greater flexibility in the processing of foreigners in Spain
01 December 2011 @ 14:12

The Secretary of State for Immigration and Emigration of the Ministry of Labour, Anna Terrón, and the Secretary of State for Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Industry, Alfredo Bonet, in his capacity as president of INVEST IN SPAIN, have signed a partnership agreement with the objective of streamlining the procedures relating to foreign workers for foreign companies in order to promote investments that will generate employment, wealth and innovation in Spain.

“Through the streamlining of immigration procedures the agreement seeks to increase the attractiveness of Spain as an investment destination and improve the business climate of the country in sectors which have high added value,” said Alfredo Bonet.

Meanwhile, Anna Terrón stressed the importance of uniting the efforts to encourage foreign investment, saying “this agreement is an important step forward that will help capture the interest of new foreign firms and support those which are already established,” she added.

Under this agreement the State Agency for Attraction of Foreign Investment, INVEST IN SPAIN, will facilitate the management of administrative procedures for foreign nationals on the one hand for companies wishing to set up in Spain and on the other for the Secretary of State for Immigration, which has the power to authorise the entry, residence and employment of foreigners in whose professional activity lie elements of economic, social or labour-related interest that require high qualifications. To this end, reports will be prepared on investment projects that allow them to be streamlined within the Spanish regulatory framework on immigration.

Also, the documentation of economic and financial firms to submit Spanish consulates will be subject to study and review and advice will be given on the design of measures to improve the mobility of workers outside Spain. The agreement, which came into force when it was signed, will last for two years, after which it will be automatically extended every year.
