hi all. does anyone know of a Spanish bank that doesn't charge to receive euros from a currency dealer in the UK? We have account with Caja Rural but they charge and it is very annoying! Also, what about a bank that doesn't charge when you present a cheque from the sale of a property?  Thanks.

I used to transfer money from Halifax UK to Halifax Hispania (now Lloyds International) using their  "free" currency transfer service for customers with accounts in both countries.  But since the takeover the exchange rate they use is so poor, it's cheaper to use a separate FX company so now I use HIFX whose exchange rates are excellent.

If you use one of the major fx companies and have the money deposited in one of Spains ' high street banks' you should avoid any recieving charges, check with the fx company, they have arrangements in place.

To explain the process...most Spanish Banks (scandalously) charge for recieving money  directly from  an overseas Bank.

To get around this, the better FX companies transfer the money to THEIR  spanish bank , then the money is transferred from there to the client's account.

So,in the eyes of the receiving Bank, this is a domestic transfer and accordingly does not attract a charge.

I use currencies direct for all transfers and would recommend them to anyone.

I too use Currencied Direct and Bancaja and pay no fees.  I dont send much every month and if I run short there is a local Currencies Direct at La Zenia and if I telephone with my English Debit Card the money is in Bancaja within 24 hrs and no charges either end.

Hi all

when I 'top up' my Barclays account in Spain, I send the money from my HSBC UK account who charge £9 for this service. The money usualy arrives the same day and Barclays don't make any further charges. For this quick and haslefree service, I don't find £9 to bad a price to pay.

Regards.

Tech

I do the same as tech ... We use a SEPA payment from our UK bank direct to our Cajamar account. (I think you can do up to 5K per time GBP).  No additional charges Sp end.

I have worked out tho that my UK bank (First Direct) give approx 0.02% less on the exchange rate than the days bank rate.

But not bad all round and we are happy to have a good, reliable service. (As tech says, the money is usually there in 24/48hrs after the transfer is put into action).

@eggcup  - I'm not sure if you can prevent charges coming from local banks due to their terms and conditions. However, i do know FX companies like RationalFX charge no fees of transfer and will be doing a Happy hour next Tuesday that will provide market value rates for US/EUR and GBP/EUR

I would double check with your bank to see if they can help.
