Hi Everyone

A close friend had a stroke a fortnight ago and Torrevieja hospital discharged him on Thursday. They have provided no aftercare and although we´ve managed to get a wheelchair, comode and walking frame from Help Vega Baja, we need some other stuff and if anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.

We need a slide sheet and a turntable (apparently it enables a carer to move a heavy person). We need a portable bed hoist (something that he´ll be able to hold on to to pull himself into a more upright position.

We need to know if there is anywhere else we can go for assistance - The Stroke Association have an answermachine in operation due to Christmas, similarly for Cunningham nurses, they can´t help until after Christmas, British Legion, Torrevieja - answermachine.

Any advice, equipment, guidance etc. would be much appreciated.

Irene & Alan

Hi Irene & Alan,

I don´t know if my advice can help, as I live in a different area, but I hope it will. I know of a similar situation in the Manilva, Malaga area, as I helped an eldery couple get some assistance and equiptment from the Junta de Andalucia and authorities.

Basically in the local town hall is the Bienestar Social Department. If the familly/ individual register/s as needing help they usually provide a hoist, etc. for fee from their supplies. Also, they pay benefits to the person taking care of the ill and also give grants for any work necesarry in the house renovation- bathroom changes, etc.

As I don´t know the situation in your area, I suggest you take his papers, medical records, etc- and ask with the  authorities where your friend is registered under the padron.

Also, here there is an Association- Age Concern providing equipment for rent at a very low cost, it might be good to see if they also have a branch in your area.

Hope my advice helped.

My best wishes.

Valentina
