I am thinking of buying a ceiling fan for the living room area of my 3 bedroom apartment. This is instead od air con. Can anyone advise me on which is the best type to buy and from where please? Much appreciated.

John.

Unless you intend not to come in July and Aug, get A/C, a fan will not cut it.  ( especially if you intend to rent and want return customers )  In my opinion of course.

Agree totally re air Con

& remember air con blows hot too which is great if you are over during the spring / winter autumn times . The days can be hot even in December but its cold of an evening

Hi,

Over there this year for the month of August - ceiling fans in both bedrooms and a movable fan in the lounge made no difference whatsoever. If you are thinking of renting out the competition with air con will drown you out for the summer months. We are looking at one air con unit for 850 euros that will do the whole apartment. If you still think fans are the way to go then Brico House at Camposol sell them for about 99euros each(model we chose).

Relatives booked an apartment in Jardin 5 during August believing it had aircon throughout and it only had one A/C in the lounge- totally insufficient. They bought a fan and borrowed one we had*. Had A/C unit on virtually all the time they were actually at the apartment as they were also groundfloor and didnt feel safe/comfortable leaving back patio doors open whilst they were on the front patio or in the night. It was incredibly hot during that month- they recorded 47 degs on front patio and in lounge.

Should have also said  *but they also had to sleep with all bedroom doors open for duration of visit with the aircon on in lhe lounge.

We had the same debate however initially finances dictated that the air con be on hold.

We've now spent two summers out in condado without Aircon and managed with £5 fans in each room (bought from Woolies just before their demise). We have got the benefit of louvered shutters on the front paio doors so were able to shut them and leave the patio doors open to allow some airflow.

We've managed without and although a litttle uncomfortable on a couple of evenings this year I still can't quite justify the expense of full Aircon and running costs. If we were there for the full 6 weeks of summer or were there in mid winter when heating is required then may be the cost would be justified.

Also - if I were renting I think it is a must as the number of apartments being rented on CdA if one apartment has it and the other doesn't I know which one I would choose to rent!

For now we are happy to go without and may also go the ceiling fan route to replace the upright floor standing ones we have (much quieter at night).

We have two large ceiling fans in living room and two small ceiling fans in each of the bedrooms, we must admit we have never been out in August but have been out in July........ where cools down to a balmy 28 on terrace at midnight and have never thought once we wished we had aircon. The fans have never had to be full on at any time and have not lost one minutes sleep due to temp'.

Have one large electric eco heater which does perfectly well in the winter and colder months.

Have to add to earlier post that our relatives are from USA and are used to having A/C but also that we have it in our apartment and radiators. We use the aircon sparodically as opening windows and doors is generally sufficient during the day but there have been a good few occasions when we have been really pleased we have had it installed. 1st floor can sleep with bedroom windows open so that helps in the night but other friends and family have felt they needed the aircon between June and Sept. We have often used the radiators between Oct and March- low level background heat. Ist Christmas was very cold Boxing Day onwards and remember this year they had snow.

We have friends living locally (15 years) and aircon and heating was the 1st thing they suggested we did even before furniture-infact they said to take up floor tiles and put in under floor heating!! Winters can be surprisingly chilly.
