Carol,

Worst case (and I know this is not a solution to the issue), heading south on the motorway towards Mazarron, 2 exits down (about 5 mins from the Condado entrance) is Campasol.  In sector B (same side you come of the motorway) there is a shopping area, and a number of bars/restaurants.  "Ally Palais" has internet - (at 1€ for 30 mins) - and you could even try some of that wine thingy stuff whilst you are there!!

Ted

Thanks!!! - If you have a 16yr old daughter, don't think I am quite old enough for that!  Am sure my son will find that very amusing though.

Does anyone know; are the internet dongles for a lap top, that you can purchase in the UK as successful in Spain? We have one here from '3' which costs £5.00 per month for 30 hours connection- which is all we need but they did have other time options.

Hi
The internet dongles for a lap top, that you can purchase in the UK may well work in Spain, but if it is on a UK contract your inclusive time will not be relevant when you use it in Spain, you would pay roaming charges which are expensive when you use it in another country. You would have to see if you could get a similar Spanish contract in Spain, which I don’t know at this time if they are available?

Maybe someone else can help?

The link below has some commentary on this - see last para re Spain.

http://www.top10-broadband.co.uk/guides/broadband_abroad/

also couple of posts here re possible networks.
http://www.spainexpat.com/spain/forum/viewthread/2393/

If you google "mobile broadband in spain" there are other links, but they are blocked by my company internet so can't check them.

Hope these help, local service is likely to be much cheaper than using a UK service in Spain.

I asked at the snagging office on site yesterday where our telephone was, expecting to get it handed over so I could plug it in and use it to call all PW´s numbers for free (as sold to us when we signed up).

Cristina, the very pleasant but totally out of her depth receptionist, told me that there would be no telephone connection, no internet and no TV for 6 to 12 months!!!!

Haven´t had chance to chase it further but I will later this week.  Gotta get my roof reversed first!!!

Tim

Think I confused things earlier. I know the UK dongle will cost a lot to use in Spain, or not work.  I meant did anyone know how successful the Spanish versions are- though you'd need a contract phone I imagine.  On the Gadjet show they had a piece of equipment that you could use to link to your tv at home provided you had an intenet link.

Obviously this would annoy our 18 year old who would think he had full control of the tv whilst we were away!

Will look at Teds suggestions.

Think we could be in DVD world for a while.

Was in touch with someone today who lives on Hacienda, he said if I go to a vodafone store in Murcia I would be able to get a dongle for around 48 euros a month, minimum contract 18 mths and could register for skype here in UK before I go out....... I think thats my only option as when I spoke to computer shop in camposol they said I wouldnt be in the catchment for their antenna for telitec connection........now I am going to research skype as I have not got a clue what it is, what it does or how you use it...... will update if I get my head around it.

Hi Carol,

Skype is a internet phone service which allows you to do loads of good stuff.

The most important for you I think is that it allows you to have a UK telephone number regardless of where you are in the world.

For example our friends live in Malaga and they have a 0161 (Manchester) number for skype. So when we call them from our BT phone this is a UK national rate call and not international to Spain.

The best bit is that Skype to Skype calls are free over your internet connection.
You can buy a Skype phone to connect to your computer and even put it onto some mobile phones now (so that you use skype when ever you have a wireless internet connection instead of the mobile network).

oh yes and you can make free Skype to Skype video calls to anywhere in the world.

The best website is www.skype.com which tells you all about it and how to download free.

One small word of warning Skype is very good , but only as good as your internet connection, but as its free it worth a try regardless.

Hope this helps you.

Hi Carol,
As Phil said skype is great, we have it on our computer and we can speak and see our friends in Australia, clever stuff. Only  thing is my web cam has decided to throw it's hand in, have to get a new one soon.
When your online you can see one to one but if somebody else wants to join the chat you lose the picture but can hear each other. We were over in the UK talking to friends in Australia and New Zealand at the same time. Check it out.

Folks

Glad you have all discovered SKYPE - at 0.17cents to call any landline in the world it is great.

Also, for you folks who are looking at spending a bit of time in Spain, it is worthwhile getting a Spanish pay-as-you-go mobile, especially if you are receiving calls from UK mobiles.  The reason being is that calls received by you DO NOT cost you anything - only the person making the call.  If you have an orange or vodafoine phone from the UK, just pop into one of these stores in Spain, buy your new PAYG number, plug it into your phone and away you go, keeping your phonebook etc.

Alan

Hi All - Just saw this thread on another forum - What do you think and/or does anyone know anything about it?-----------------------------------------------------Warning anyone thinking of signing up to the polaris/sky package, wait, save your money our legal department (SKY)is on the case, and they will not be showing it for much longer. they dont have the licence from sky & it is not cost affective for such a small amount off viewers for them to try buy a licence. what there doing is taking sky then charging you for it the 18 euros a month subscription there charging is illegal I noticed that the head off communication at la torre(kayjaad)would not discuss this on a public forum incase it put the tv deal in jeopardy, well too late kj its in jeopardy. dont say you havnt been warned
