Poll: Should smoking be banned on all beaches in Spain?
Thursday, February 18, 2021 @ 7:54 PM

Barcelona city council will ban smoking on four of its beaches in a pilot test this summer.

Between the end of May and mid-September, people will be barred from smoking on the beaches of Sant Miquel, Somorrostro, Nova Icària and Nova Mar Bella, four of the ten beaches in the Catalan capital.

The aim of this project is twofold: minimizing the number of cigarette butts that are left in the sand that eventually ends up in the sea, thus protecting the environment, as well as acting as a measure to protect the health of bathers on the beach.

The initiative led by the city council also aims to raise awareness about the impact of smoking.

The local councillor in charge of climate matters, Eloi Badia, explained that cigarette butts are some of the most damaging elements to beaches in terms of pollution, as they contain up to 4,000 chemicals, around 400 of which are toxic. In addition, they take between 10-12 years to disintegrate.

"The measure will allow us to somewhat curb environmental pollution and allow us to take a step forward in the protection of beaches," he said, citing Galicia’s smoke-free beaches as an example.

Authorities also explained that the ban’s aim is not focussed on punishing those who smoke on the beach - the ban won’t directly result in fines - but more about raising awareness.

Instances of non-compliance could be transferred to the Guardia Urbana local police who will be able to instruct people that smoking is banned in the area. However, if the beachgoer then still does not comply, the local police would then be able to hand out a fine, but the reason would be disrespecting authorities rather than breaking the smoking ban.

What do you think? Should smoking be banned on all beaches in Spain?

What a positive move it would make and why not ?
Another consideration to children playing in the sand and surrounding sea
So much healthier and clean up costs
Would you do same at your own home

It won't be easy. The government will not want to lose the tax income, and Spain in general despises change.

This ban is another step towards the loss of individual liberty. I am a smoker and I always have respected non smokers. At the beach, I sit away from people and I always carry my ASHTRAY. I bother no one and I leave no mess behind, and I have seen a lot of smokers with that attitude. So please, stop blaming us smokers for everything including climate! It would be a lot more sensible to fine people leaving trash behind on the beach, be it cigarette buts or picnic rests...

I have noticed in my former trips at the beaches in Spain that smokers are the biggest and most disrespectful mess in public.
So all ban of smoking in the white sand of beaches should have been banned for long time ago. - Now is the time to take this step.

The beach is a wide open space , I am a non smoker and as it a wide open space I have no problem with people smoking but I do have a problem with people leaving their litter. Take your litter including cigarette butts with you when you leave simple.

Absolutely not, I am a non smoker but to take away more rights from people then you can kiss goodbye to tourism. My daughter smokes but carries her own portable ashtray with her and I believe as long as there is social distancing and fines for those who dump their butts in the sand or on the ground, then that should suffice.

It should be banned on beaches. Interesting that the rights of the smoker seem to be an issue yet the rights of the non smoker are ignored. Sit outside a bar when someone smokes and it stinks, the same when you are near someone smoking on a beach. Unless you can control the smoke then it shouldn’t be allowed. It’s also a litter problem on beaches and elsewhere. Walk past any bar and you will find hundreds of cigarette butts on the floor and many empty packets. It isn’t non smokers that leave them there.

About time I'm fed up with smokers lighting up next to me on the beach.

I’m not a smoker but don’t see the need to ban it

Cigarette butts left discarded or buried in the sand on a beach has resulted in many people being injured by the burning butts.

Burning cigarette butts are so dangerous as many children have experienced horrendous burns to their feet by trampling on these butts/

Smoking is also very damaging to the health of the smoker as well as those around him / her from secondary smoke inhalation. It should be banned in all public places.

What's the point in a poll if you can't see the results?

Well in the end the beaches will be cleaner.
However, it is only a very, very small of the muck left on the beaches... by whoever.
If there was a bit more education and respect then others liberties would not be molested ..
Plastic bags, bottles, unwanted, sandwich containers...the list goes on..that is worse than bunch of people smoking. And what about these tobacco free cigarettes..are they banned too..
So it's ok for plastic rubbish.. that you can leave and pollute the environment for our grandchildren to suffer in the future..mmm.
All a bit fake to me.
As said, we should educate and have respect and take our rubbish home...after all we normally bring it from there..
