Hi, new to the forum. My name is Marty. I'm in Westchester County Ny. I'm moving to Valencia with my dog Maddie in about a month. She's a 5 or 6 yr. old kelpie cross. A kind of black and tan border collie type. Here she has a huge backyard where she runs off leash and we spend every day for about 3 or 4 hours at a nearby fenced in dog park. I'm also a dog walker so we have many dogs with us. Because I'm the park's photographer, our canine activities are well documented on my website if you wanna see Maddie etc: just the word  "dotfur" in google will get you there.

All I can find so far about Valencia and dogs is that they are now banned entirely all the time from the beaches. Sad, 'cause I figured okay: we won't wondering through the woods anymore but we will be romping up and down the beach. Uh uh. My brother who lives in Madrid is buying proerty in Valencia to rent out to students and wants me to come run the scene there. So, I think we will be in a cosmopolitan area near the university: traffic, sidewalks, etc.

Anybody know ANYTHING about the life of a dog in Valencia: parks, fenced in dog parks, dogs walking off leash along the sidewalk with their owner, other Dogs-In-Spain forums, the dog walker scene - in case I want to try my hand over there, dogs on the metro, dogs on buses?

Any information would be helpful. What a great site.

Marty

HI Marty

Welcome to Eye on Spain.

I personally know nothing about Valencia and even less about dogs.

However, you should ask the main man in Valencia, Graham Hunt, as I'm sure he will know the answers to these questions.

His blog is here and you can find him on twitter too.

All the best with your plans.

Justin

 Hi!

Dogs are quite integrated in the spanish lifestyle. It is true thaat dogs are not allowed in the beach, but you can always go to virgin beaches (saler, pinedo...) where are empty most of the time and i dont think no one will tell you nothing.

Valencia is great for dogs! Some neighbourhood have even dog litter areas like avenida de francia zone. It is also very common to have a walk through the riverside that is like a massive garden that cross the city.

All neighbourhoods have parks where dogs can smell and be in touch with nature. One of the best places is parque de cabecera where thousands of dogs play during the weekend.

Even if you go for a drink, dogs are most of the time welcome as long as they stay in the terrrace and doesnt get inside the bar.

Valencia has thousands of vets, dog hairdresser, kennels and even pet clothes shops. I love zoolandia!

Also nearly all houses on rent allow pets as long as they are not too big.

Lastly y would like to say that a lot of rural hotels are now pet friendly.

Thank you, FairFlats !!!

So funny. My post was from years ago. We got to Valencia (Cabanyal) and were (for two years) a major part of Ayora Dog Park. See my website dotfur for all the photos. We walked often on the beach - we lived right nearby. We became friends with a stray podenco (actuallya Portuguese Podengo Grande) who then wound up living in an abandoned house with a homeless woman then a horrible shelter. We rescued him, and after months of posting on FaceBook, we found him a home (HUGE, 500 acres) in North Carolina... we decided to return with him (his name: Multu, look on FaceBook: Multu Needs A Home) and escort him to his new home. So here we are now 2 years or more after my post here - back in The States. Like those T-Shirts that say: I went to etc.. and all I got was this T-Shirt. We went to Spain and all we got was this Podenco. Podencos/Podengos are VERY ancient Spanish/Iberian hounds. Probably nothing more Iberian that we could have gotten involved with.

Thanks,

Marty & Maddie
