After looking at the way car hire rates (and availability) have gone compared to a year ago, I'm thinking along the lines of "rent a wreck" anyone got any ideas? (flying into and back out of Murcia later in July).
Fact is we don't need a car enough to warrant spending £300-£400 to have it sat outside all week, that said it's nice to be able to jump in and shoot off somewhere if the fancy takes us.
Maybe I'm just a tight so and so, but got to be worth asking.. 
Incidentally, we're based mid-way between Guardamar and Orihuela and also aboout mid-point between the 2 airports (alicante & murcia).We have a secure, underground 2.5 car garage (don't ask about the 0.5), which is sat empty all year round too.. so if there are any "creative thinking" types reading this, who can think of a way to make a few quid, please feel free to pm me with any suggestions/ideas! (don't be shy)
